		Autechre has always pushed the limits of musical definition on their albums, and even now, with the uncategorizable Confield, Autechre has instead decomposed their sound, instead of elevating it, and it sounds remarkably interesting.
		It's sound is often tiring and sometimes disturbing after the second listen and the mood, although fascinating when observed like a foreign substance under a microscope, is not as interesting as the electro-funk days of Tri-Repetae++, one of the greatest electronic albums in music history.
		So, Confield, although quite an artistic achievement on the basis that - Autechre can always come up with something new - is almost too mellow and quiet to fill the desperate need for another action-packed Autechre album.

		Vertiphon - 28-Aug-04 03:54 PM "Confield" was my first Autechre album, and while my original thoughts were that I had wasted my money, over time I have begun to appreciate what Autechre have created here.
		Arguably Autechre's most difficult album to listen to, "Confield" is not nearly as bad as some people would have you believe, but newcomers to Autechre's music would be better of starting with "Incunabula", "Amber" or "Tri Repetae".
		Confield marks their first album that almost seemed as if the beats and patterns were created radomally.

		Listening to Confield is like wandering around without a destination or clear itinerary and discovering things on the left and right of the road by chance.

		In fact, the haunting, mechanical sounds Autechre makes on Confield, like on most of their albums, is timeless in a sense that one would be hard put to figure out wheat time it’s from.
		Still, their reliance on cold electronic sounds definitely gives their music a more realistic “futuristic” feel than a lot of electronic musicians come up with and Confield is no exception.
		What sets Confield apart from a lot of other ambient techno CDs, say Aphex Twin or the Orb, is the sinister feel to them.

		It sounds somewhat like draft 7.30; the vibe of their more "oldschool" works is combined with the more technical confield like sounds in their newer works.
		Where confield is a bit an uneasy record and sounds a bit to crafted, the draft and untilted records sound like their are played and improvised by a human band (booth/brown).
		Personally, for me, "Confield" was the height of their sonic-sculpting career (so far) and to immediately follow it with "Draft 7" was a personal low.

		All other sounds revolve around this rhythm, in much the same way a tether-ball revolves around a pole as it is being hit and spun by ten-year-old boys.

		To be honest with you, I'm not absolutely sure what my views on Confield are; they tend to fluctuate and change as much as the rhythms and beats on a typical Autechre track do.
		Others, even those who are well-versed in electronic music, may allow the album a lot more time and patience and still never really "get it." It's a lot less accessible than some of the older Ae efforts, partly due to a more or less complete absence of conventional melodies.
		Apparently it's shaping up to be their most accessible record yet, the complete antithesis of Confield, after which, returning to familiar ground could prove to be a bit of a disappointment.

		Confield stands in retrospect as one Autechre's best records.
		It's certainly not their most widely beloved or even accepted album, but it represents an important step in that it clears the slate for their entire catalog.

		If John Coltrane was alive today and got ahold of a sampler and a mixer, Confield might be the kind of music Coltrane would make.
