Reconciling Conflicting Theories of the Effects of Childhood Maltreatment on Adult Religiosity and Spirituality: ...
Current theories offer conflicting accounts of the effects of childhood maltreatment on adult religiosity, while, in empirical research, use of probability sampling is rare, as is a focus on non-sexual forms of abuse, and research often does not control for risk factors for abuse which may also affect adult religiosity.
In this research, I synthesize these theories by focusing on how the effects of abuse may vary, depending on the source of maltreatment, and I test this synthesis by examining the effects of non-sexual forms of abuse on adult religiosity in a nationally representative sample of adults at midlife.

Organizational Theories in Higher Education Faculty Evaluation
Initially, the conflict arises because higher educational organizations and the individuals who work in them want to inhabit an idealized environment, where appropriate, just decisions are made about promotion and tenure, and where faculty members continually strive to improve their teaching.
Foremost among the explanations for the conflict is perception.
The second conflicting set of worldviews that manifests itself in sub-cultures within higher education organizations concerns the nature of evaluation methods and the importance of accountability.

 Stumper Questions for Creationists
Many people find that the most important part of a theory is a clear description of what the theory says and does not say.
In order to decide between conflicting theories, it is important that not only must the conflicting theories be well described, and that the evidence supporting the conflicting theories be proposed, but also that there be established some rules for deciding between the theories and evaluating the evidence.
Many people find a theory which is open to change in the face of new evidence much more satisfying than one which is inflexible.

Early Israel a Look at Theories of Origin, Family Life, Domestic Cult and Village Religion
Scholars and archaeologists have produced new theories about the origin and background of the ancient Israelite nation.
Those who believe the Bible´s story of the exodus to be reliable, place it in the 13th century BCA, possibly under the pharaoh Merneptah.
Despite conflicting views, there seems to be a common agreement that the early Israelites were a mixed people, and that it took a few hundred years to make the different groups and tribes into a single people with a common identity.

20th WCP: The Relation of Rights to the Real: A Reconsideration of Bentham's Ontology
Conflicting theories of law have the effect that Quine (albeit in another context from law) describes as referring to distinctive sets of existents (1980, 8-9), in some cases even to their own "hierarchies of being." These are proposed for "what [we are to believe] there is"; thereupon they affect both analysis and conduct.
But he notes that the two theories, benefit and choice, are better suited as accounts of "the rights of citizen against citizen; that is of rights under the 'ordinary' law." They "are not sufficient to provide an analysis of...
At the root of other aspects of Bentham's theory is his characterization of all rights as fictions, a notion that is intimately connected with the comprehensive ontology elucidated by Ogden in his edited selection of Bentham's writings, Bentham's Theory of Fictions (1959).

  Episode of conflict
Critics argue that another theory could be used to explain exactly the same data and have the same level of explanatory truth, therefore a theory using indirect observations does not aid science in its aim to gain knowledge.
Kuhn would argue that the reasons for preferring one theory to another is not based on the logical reasoning of perceiving one theory as superior to the other, but a complex mix of variables that attract the scientific community to decide between two incompatible models.
The two theories are therefore lacking a universal criterion by which to judge one theory as being closer to the 'truth'.

The human sciences are the most favourable environment for the genesis of conflicting theories.
In the experimental sciences, conflicting theories are, and have often been, also present.
In the absence of a way to decide between conflicting theories (eg, experimental demolition of one or the other -- or both), the conflict cannot be resolved.

This perspective interprets federalism as an expression of philosophical theories and concerns, particularly those 18th century theories of the nature of society that were influential during the founding period.
Recent experience with conflicts within and among states impinged on (in Madison's words) the "artificial structure and regular symmetry which an abstract view of the subject might lead an ingenious theorist to bestow on a constitution planned in his closet, or in his imagination" (Federalist 37).
While the general view is that compact theory was laid to rest once and for all by the Civil War, it occasionally re-emerges in the national discourse about the role of states.

A proposition in one theory may be mapped to a compatible proposition in the other theory (syncretism) or to a proposition not present in either theory.
This work assumes that both theories are in the same language and a harmonizing valuation function is constructed from the valuation functions of the given theories.
Given two consistent theories in first-order logic, they may be combined to produce a third consistent theory by simply mapping the theories to different languages and take the union of the theories.

Psychoanalytic theories focus on unconscious needs while behavioral theories focus on the role of tension reduction to account for alcohol abuse.

Some of the theories focused on Israeli crew member Col. Ilan Ramon, implying that his ethnicity and the fact that he participated, as an Israeli Air Force pilot, in the 1981 bombing of an Iraqi nuclear reactor, were evidence of Jewish or Israeli complicity in the disaster.
Coming at a time of great tragedy for both the American and Israeli people, the conspiracy theories about the space shuttle show how the Internet continues to be used to spread misinformation and bigotry, and how some are quick to use a national tragedy for their own purposes.
The theories demonstrate that, even in times of tragedy and sadness, those who weave conspiracies involving Jews and Israel are hard at work.

 Unified Theory of Nutrition
Such a theory could potentially unlock all the secrets of nature and the universe itself, or as theoretical physicist Michio Katu, puts it "an equation an inch long that would allow us to read the mind of God." That's how important unified theories can be.
However, unified theories don't have to deal with such heady topics as physics or the nature of the universe itself, but can be applied to far more mundane topics, in this case nutrition.
Over time, different lines of evidence, whether it be mathematical, physical, etc., supports the theory and thus solidifies that theory as being correct, or continued lines of evidence shows the theory needs to be revised or is simply incorrect.

The Coherence Theory of Truth (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy)
Certainly a coherence theory was adopted by a number of British Idealists in the last years of the nineteenth century and the first decades of the twentieth.
A coherence theory of truth gives rise to a regress, but it is not a vicious regress and the correspondence theory faces a similar regress.
All other versions of the theory, however, have to cope with the objection, including the view that truth is coherence with a set of propositions believed at the limit of inquiry.

 Whitehead’s Theory of Relativity
During a time of conflict, crisis, and revolution in the scientific community, when the world witnesses the emergence of a new scientific theory, the philosophical community is placed in a period of uneasy ambiguity, which is heightened when the "truth" or "falsity" of the new theory has not been established.
It is the explanatory content of a theory which revolutionizes an epoch, for it functions to lead science to the establishment of new principles and procedures.
In the Special Theory of Relativity Einstein, as is well known, denied the ontological status of the "ether." But we must remember that in the General Theory Einstein shifted his position and reintroduced spacetime as having physical qualities and the ontological capacity to act.

However, he still concludes that it is not fair to generalize this evidence to the actual effect of TV violence on crime or other measures of aggression in the "real world." While many of you seemed to get this far, many of you went one step further, a step that is not necessarily logically justified.
Namely, you concluded that because different theories are available and each seems to be supported by some evidence, we can not make use any of them to help us decide what social policy to pick.
One of the reasons that you may not have seen the implications of your general rejection of the theories that you learned about is a failure to appreciate the consequences of the fact that we live in a complex "multi-causal" social world.
