Chinese Men of letters sharing Confucean values can also be paralleled with Western humanists.
The word is derived from the Latin classicus which literally means "belonging to the highest class of citizens".

At this time, Confucianism became the dominnt ideology, and a lot of works were edited (having been destroyed by Qin), some texts being found, with sometime editions or additions (eg some chapters in the Shujing), commentaries were written (eg the Gongyang and Guliang commentaries on the Chunqiu), works were compiled (Zhanguoce), or commented upon (Guoyu).
As such, there was something like a confucean reinterpretation of history.
He seldom borrows from the Gongyang zhuan, and seems to have a less conventional approach, especially wrt "recent history" (ie Qin and the civil war).

This famous aphorism of the confucean "Great commentary" of the I Ching, expresses non-permanence as the real nature of things.
There are narrow parallelisms between the I Ching and the former Chinese philosophy and chronobiology (Feng Shui).
Confucean tradition was alternately choosing one or else of these two antithetic readings, while neo-taoist philophers Wang Bi and Wang Fuzhi insisted at contrary on the single nature of the Changes.

In this meaning, this "group" can be identified, during periods of discussions with others doctrines, like Han and Tang dynasty, with a kind of political party.
During periods of confucean hegemony like Song, Ming and Qing dynasties, it can be identified roughly with the social class of government officials.
But the reality of such a group is debated.

Often sceptical and being ironic on human values as morality, benevolence and proper behavior, Taoist writers don't share the Confucean belief in civilisation as a way to build a better society, they rather share the will to leave alone in mountains with wild animals, or as simple peasants in small autarcic villages.
For many Chinese educated people (the Literati), life was split unto a social part, where Confucean doctrine prevailed, and a private part with Taoist aspirations.
At home, during the nights, being banned far away or after retiring where good occasions to cultivate Taoism and, say, reread Lao-tzu's and Chuang Tzu's books.

The Han Dynasty was, therefore, at once an age of consolidation, of change, of experiment; in four centuries the immense effort devoted to agriculture, the improvement and diffusion in the field of technology and great movements of population totally transformed the economic scene.
Autocratic government, the desire to centralize power, the ascendancy of Confucean ideology and social revolution brought a change in outlook.
After a while those in control realized they had to give up a little in order to hold on to a lot.

My impression is that considering confucianism (the original for of it) as a religion actually obscures the matter: to me, the confucean canon is more some kind of political theory which strives at explaining/justifying the way the world worked in their time.
When looking back upon history we have a tendency to exaggerate the impact or influence of such personas among their comtemporaries.
Back on topic, when would you say confucean religious practice appeared/became common in China.

Since, as a martial art, Kendo is so much related to death, what is the (quasi-) religious experience that comes with it ?
Why do we have to mix Kendo with confucean values (maintenance of a specific social order) or shinto values (related to japanese identity and nationalism) ?
Why do the Japanese federations refuse to accept that the difference between a "sport" and a "budo" is only ideological and not at all related to the reality of the practice, and, more importantly, to the interpretation each practitioner has of the practice itself ?

Western values may not be the fine word of civilisation.
In Chinese history, the power has been understood as cultural influence, as shown in Confucean books like the Great Learning.
Even if China now have growing economic power, and may also enjoy great military power, Chinese leaders may well think that the only lasting power (or "effective influence") is in the cultural field.

Other "societies" value different approaches : custom of traditional African societies for instance is founded on models of conduct and behaviour and reveals a negociated order.
In the Confucean tradition marked by autodiscipline and the respect of rites (li) systems of lasting dispositions or habitus which reveal an accepted order are valued.
Further, if different cultural traditions value this three "feet" of Law differently, the latter are nevertheless present in all traditions and seem to constitute the fundaments of the "legal phenomenon" (see Le Roy 1999 : 202).

But a withdrawal from the wider international relations, if not for links with the Soviet Union and its Eastern Bloc, has made the Vietnamese people in general eager for contacts with people from abroad.
Add to that a very strong relation to tradition, in the form of the Buddhist religion and the Confucean philosophy, and you end up with a very spontaneous population that considers life in society as not a necessary evil, but rather an occasion for pleasure and redemption.

This is what I do feel each time I read Hu Jintao's speeches: he reminds me of common Rujia (Confucean) sayings.

But I also have big doubts about this : even in Western coutries, nudity is not seen with the same eyes in, for example, USA and Finland or Germanic countries.
Plus, despite Japan has no substantial christianic history, the Confucean ideas (Edo period) have restricted the nudity, also has done the Meiji and Taisho government.
