The conga is a tall, narrow, single-headed Cuban drum of African origin, probably derived from the Congolese Makuta drums.
Congas are now very common in Latin music, including salsa music, as well as many other forms of American popular music.
Music of Puerto Rico refers to the drums only as congas, but gives the names as tumba for the largest, niño for the smallest, and does not provide names for the two middle drums.

The conga or tumbadora originated as a musical instrument in Cuba as part and parcel of the rumba, yet the instrument is nowhere found in the early days of this important Cuban musical genre.
The musical instruments on which the rumba was first played were the side board of a cabinet and the emptied and overturned drawer from a dressing table.
The cajones are therefore the historical precursors of the tumbadoras (congas) in the rumba fiesta.

No matter what musical conversations he was invited into, Pozo (to riff on a famous Gillespie remark) was always speaking African.
