Participation dance - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Participation dance, also known as group-participation dance or audience participation dance, is a major category or classification of dance forms or dance styles based on purpose.
The purpose of this type of dance is to actively encourage dancing (participation) in a group.
The dancing that is encouraged might be among those who would otherwise be passive dance viewers, or it might be among dancers who are encouraged to dance in a new way, or with new partners.

The LA "1" dancer dances to the melody emphasis whilst the New York "2" dancer dances to the drum/percussion beat which has an emphasis on beat 2.
The New York "2" dancer's movements are based on listening to the conga "slap" accent, whilst the clave dancer's movements are based on listening to the 5 beat clave pattern.

 Our Dance & Music
Technically, it is proper to start the dance in the following way: You walk onto the dance floor with your partner, set up the standard partner position frame, and then begin on the 6th beat of the measure, with the man stepping forward with his left foot and the woman stepping back with her right.
Specifically, the conga is struck with 2 quick beats and then a 3rd "slap", usually on the outer edge or rim of the drum, in the pattern of quick-quick-slow.
One can dance in many ways, and in connection with many different aspects of the music: rhythm, melody, mood, meaning of the words, tempo, harmony, intensity, etc. What matters most is what each dancer prefers.....and that they don't smash into their neighbors on the dance floor.

Unlike the look-but-don't-touch vibe of some other clubs, the Conga Room, which conjures up the heat of the Caribbean and Latin America, is about emotion as expressed in touch dancing.
Although the popularity of the new club, which opened in February, may be tied to the national revival of swing dancing, the Conga Room is not nearly as much an exercise in nostalgia as self-consciously retro swing clubs.
Congas are ubiquitous, in oversize versions painted on the wall and in the guise of cocktail tables..
