Congo (1995) - IMDb user comments   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-15)
Congo is the first movie on the IMDB for which I am writing a user comment.
Congo isn't nearly the terrible movie that many people believe it is. It isn't a movie for everybody or even a movie for most people: but it was created with a certain audience in mind, and many people are simply too serious and high-minded to belong to that audience.
Congo and movies like it are cartoons for adults: if you don't like movies with colorful visuals, ridiculous plots and juvenile characters, you should not watch Congo.

Congo is about what all these sorts of flicks are about: Greed, adventure, more greed, scientific discovery, yet more greed, some ecological concerns thrown in just for good measure, and then even more greed.
However, what is bound to disappoint most are the mundane properties of personification attributed to Amy, the precocious gorilla at the core of this adventure yarn.
In the safari movies of old, they lamented the ever-shrinking wilderness as a metaphor for innocence lost.

You see, the scientist is taking Amy back to the woods where she belongs, while the con man wants to find the lost city of Solomon, and they're all led by this hip African guide who can lead them through various African revolutionary armies and explain when the local volcano is likely to erupt and.
To make matters worse, the megalithic studios responsible for this glorious waste are supported by equally mindless, suck-up reviewers who expound the virtue of these productions with self-indulgent articles using pretentious language, much like this letter, in order to promote the film, promote their own careers, get more freebies and hand-shakes with their favorite stars.
That's about all I remember of that movie, other than a feeling of nausea at seeing that woman's breasts floating in a bathtub while she bathed.

Congo, the movie, was an attempt to cash in on Crichton mania after the massive success of Jurassic Park.
But Congo, the book was not a major success and a movie version had been talked about before back in the early eighties under the direction of Crichton himself and with Goldsmith scoring.
Congo wasn't that well received by critics but it didn't stop it from going on to make some good international box office though.

Basically, it is the story of a group of people that are hired to go after some diamonds, clean and uncut, in an area in Congo that is historical and is believed not to exist except in fairy tales, and local folklore.
While CONGO, has its moments, it also has its drawbacks, even if, at the end a form of justice is served and done.
Aside from that, CONGO is a well designed film, and technically well done, were it not that all these resources get wasted in the hands of someone whose direction is questionable, or the book itself just isn't good enough.

FILM REVIEW -- `Congo' -- Bungle in the Jungle / Killer-gorilla movie a cartoonish festival of high-tech violence
``Congo'' had the opportunity to be something more complex, but instead it offers a moral muddle: A team of scientists and opportunists goes into the Congo with the most advanced technology available and sets about wiping out a rare species of gorilla.
Virtually all of ``Congo'' is taken up with the expedition, which unites a group of diverse people, each of whom has a different reason for being there.
But ``Congo'' leads to nothing but a fierce battle with the gray gorillas, a kind of guns vs. fangs scene; and a convenient and incongruous volcano eruption that looks as artificial as a video game.

Congo - MOVIE REVIEW - Los Angeles Times - calendarlive.com
Under the guidance of Monroe Kelly (Ernie Hudson), who, in a typically feeble line of dialogue explains, "I'm your great white hunter, though I happen to be fl," this group is fated to encounter a bunch of apes with bad attitudes that place their plans and their lives in considerable jeopardy.
Summarized this way, "Congo" sounds acceptable because it doesn't indicate how flabby the film's execution is. Screenwriter Shanley, a well-known playwright and an Oscar winner for "Moonstruck," must have dozed through the creation of this one, filled as it is with soggy retorts and plot points that range from preposterous to plainly incomprehensible.
Every once in a while, "Congo" remembers it's supposed to be exciting and shovels some off-putting violence onto the screen, like having a character hit by a tossed eyeball.
