Vigil holders have had to make do with fewer people to guard the church, after some parishioners walked out last month in a disagreement about whether to accept support from a congregation of nuns who have broken with the Vatican.
Members of the vigil group first e-mailed the nuns of the Religious Congregation of Mary Immaculate Queen in Spokane, Wash., last fall, hoping to persuade them to give a Christmas concert at Mount Carmel to raise money for the vigil fund.
After ruling out a concert, two nuns agreed to visit the church as missionaries supporting the vigil, said parishioner Roberta Daley, who first contacted the nuns and has since left the vigil over the controversy about their visit.
