Former union finance minister P Chidambaram’s Congress Jananayaka Peravai (CJP) suffered a serious setback on Friday with the exit of Purasawakkam MLA B Ranganathan, who joined the DMK with hundreds of his supporters in the presence of DMK president M Karunanidhi in Chennai on Friday.
The split in the CJP comes as a double blow for the former finance minister, who is said to have unsuccessfully staked claim for the Sivaganga seat with the Congress high command.
Chidambaram met the Congress president Sonia Gandhi in New Delhi a few days ago, and is said to have discussed the political situation with her.
