Saving America's Subway | Planetizen   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
The Washington regional subway system, Metro, desperately needs to secure $2.4 billion in capital funding over the next 10 years in order to improve capacity and level of service.
A Congressional hearing held recently by the Committee o Government Reform was the first step towards saving Metro from falling apart.
Jack Corbett, a director of MetroRiders.org, a recently formed transit riders group, said, "We're fearful that without some congressional leadership, there never will be a good year to resolve this issue." Some argue that the federal government has a larger responsibility to fund Metro than it does with other transit systems nationwide.

They claim per-mile construction and maintenance cost of constructing a subway or light rail line often equals or excedes that of a urban freeway, yet do not divert the same number of automobiles (though supporters of public transport dispute this for urban areas).
On a few occasions, passengers have reacted by taking the law into their own hands (as in the notorious 1984 case of the "subway vigilante," Bernhard Goetz).
Despite the occasional highly publicized incident, the vast majority of modern public transport systems are well-patrolled and generally have low crime rates.

Abraham, the former chairman of the Michigan Republican Party and former cochairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee, generated largely conservative ratings from "National Journal," a reference guide to congressional Washington.
