The anterior surface of the eye is covered by contiguous but morphologically distinguishable epithelia overlying the cornea, limbus, and conjuctiva.
These epithelia, along with the associated tear film, form the first line of defense for the eye by providing a barrier to pathogen entrance as well as preventing the entrance of toxic and/or irritating chemicals and compounds.

The episclera and conjunctiva cover it, and the eye muscles are connected to it.
The conjuctiva is, simply put, "a thin lining over the sclera." (www.pasadenaeye.com/faq/faq15/faq15_text.html) It is the outermost tissue of the eye and thus is exposed to a great deal of substances and microorganisms.
Tears are produced by the conjunctival epithelium, and these help fight off the organisms that enter the eye.

Introduction: We report about a 23-year-old female with ectopic lacrimal gland tissue in nasal bulbar conjuctiva and limbal region of her right eye.
Results: The histology revealed conjuctiva with bundles of seromucous glandular tissue, which was compatible with ectopic lacrimal glands.
In case of multiple choristomas, they are situated at temporal and nasal conjuctiva, limbus and cornea.

We have developed several living in vitro models of human tissue (e.g., skin, cornea, conjuctiva), based on a non-contracting three-dimensional collagenous matrix populated with appropriate fibroblasts.
Because these models support functional epithella and/or endothelia and closely mimic ex vivo human tissue, they provide an excellent opportunity for studies of cell-cell and cell-matrix interactions during tissue development or repair.
