Connacht - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The "Republic of Connaught" had a brief existence in 1798 with French military support.
Medb (Medhbh, Maeve), Queen of Connacht in the Ulster Cycle.
^ The spelling Connaught reflects the former English practice -- in Ireland, though not in Scotland -- of representing the Gaelic voiceless velar fricative /x/ as ugh (compare lough for loch), (u)gh having been used in Middle English for the same sound.

Atlas F1 Magazine: Team Connaught: Remembrance of Things Fast (Part 2)
Connaught Patron Ken McAlpine in A1 also won a race in the 1953 season at the West Essex CC F2 race on June 27th 1953 amongst some significant competition from John Combs in the newer A8 and Roy Salvadori in A7.
One further significant race for Connaught was the Curtis Trophy held at Snetterton on October 17th 1953.
It was wet and Salvadori retired his Connaught on the first lap and Ken McAlpine, who was driving his trusty A1 slid off the course on lap 8 and overturned A1 into an earthen bank, no doubt adding to the Patron's growing disenchantment with Team Connaught as the 1953 season came to an end.

Connaught now decided to concentrate solely on the unstreamlined cars and in due course the streamliners were rebodied.
Connaught's 1956 season came to an end with the BRDC F1 Race at Brands Hatch, where Scott-Brown led home Stuart Lewis-Evans, the by then undoubted king of Formula 3, in his first F1 race, while only Salvadori's Maserati in third prevented a whitewash, for Leston and Fairman were next up.
As the race was happening, Brooks and Lewis-Evans, on one hand, and Phil Hill, on the other were all becoming locked into situations that involved giving aid to their respective team leaders rather than seeking to win the race themselves.

Atlas F1 Magazine: Team Connaught: Remembrance of Things Fast (Part 1)
Connaught's passage through this veil of tears is especially interesting because of when and how it happened and, as we shall see, its history is still in the making.
But although Connaught was now eligible to compete at the highest level, because it lacked the resources of the Italian teams, Connaught participated mostly in non-Championship races in the UK and only in selected Championship Grands Prix.
It should be understood that during this era, there were many non-Championship and club races in the course of a season, and by the end of 1952, Connaught had racked up a very respectable record in these settings of six first places, five seconds and two sixth places.

BRM was very much a racing team that had yet to undertake outside engineering projects, and suddenly Grand Prix racing was reliant upon small, specialist racing outfits such as the newly emergent Cooper and Lotus marques from Britain.
The problem with the big factory teams was that they could afford to do a better job than the underfunded smaller teams -- particularly those such as France's Gordini or Britain's Connaught -- when it came to conventional car design.
Toward the end of the decade, a movement began in which F1 racing car design would become so esoteric that it would be years before major manufacturers (with the exception of Ferrari) could come into the sport and compete on even terms.

Had he driven for the Italian team in 1959, 1960 or 1961, the chances are that he would have won the title, but by then he was fast reaching the conclusion that the Championship crown was no accurate barometer of driving talent and the whole thing did not really matter anyway.
