 CT DEP: Coyote Fact Sheet
Coyotes tend to be more slender; have wide, pointed ears; a long, tapered muzzle; yellow eyes; slender legs; small feet; and an uncurled, bushy tail which is carried low to the ground.
Coyotes appear to have low susceptibility to the "raccoon" or mid-Atlantic strain of rabies found in Connecticut (during 1991 to 1997 over 3,000 tested raccoons were rabid while over the same period only one coyote tested positive for rabies).
Coyotes are susceptible to strains of rabies that occur elsewhere in North America and to the other common canine diseases such as canine distemper.

Coyotes are opportunistic in their prey and look for smaller animals and a weaker opponent.
A coyote will sit and study an animal's activities for two weeks or more until they know when the best time to attack their prey is. Small animals should be kept on a leash with their owner at all times.
According to the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection, originally, coyotes were found only in the western United States, but a lack of predators and a capacity to travel long distances in search of new territories have expanded their range across North America over the past 100 years.
