Connemara Public Library at Chennai is one of the four National Depository libraries which receive a copy of all books, newspapers and periodicals published in India.
Conceived on the lines of the British Museum Library, it was part of the Madras Museum till 1890, when the need for 'a free public library' prompted the then Governor of Madras, Lord Connemara, to lay the foundation.
The new building, which was added to the Library in 1973, has a vast collection of books, a much sought after text-book section, a periodicals hall, a reference room, a video room, an entire floor for books from the Indian languages, a Braille Library and an IAS study centre.

The Education Minister, S. Semmalai, today urged officials in local bodies to ensure that the library cess due to the local library authority was remitted promptly so that the library system did not suffer for accumulation of arrears.
On the seminar theme of using information technology in public libraries, he said when the old concept of single building libraries was giving way to one of interlinked library systems/networks, modern advancements should be suitably adopted here.

Among libraries already committed to the Project are the Central Secretariat Library of the Department of Culture in New Delhi, Connemara Public Library, Marimalai Adigal Library, and Roja Muthiah Research Library in Madras, Bombay University, SNDT Women's University in Bombay, the Gujarati Sahitya Parishad in Ahmedabad, and the Khuda Bakhsh Oriental Public Library in Patna.
Libraries participating in the Project have the sole authority to decide which books in their collections may be filmed and whether they may, if necessary, be unbound for filming.
All libraries with substantial collections of South Asian publications from the period covered by the Project are warmly invited to participate in it.

The Marwari Library has a complete run of the journal as well as about 30 other important journals that document the period when Hindustani split into Hindi and Urdu and literatures reflecting communal identities began to evolve.
We discussed the technical aspects of the project, the condition of the journals, as well as the possibility of purchasing the microfilms directly from LC New Delhi rather than ordering the Photoduplication in Washington, D.C. Direct purchase would mean a huge savings in the time it takes to actually receive the films.
I was also able to get a list of the journals collected by the library, which helps me in making acquisitions decisions here in the U.S. Bhai Vir Singh Sadan is a member of Delnet and so articles from their journal collection could potentially be furnished through document delivery.

Microfilming of Indian Publications Project (MIPP) is preserving and making accessible all 55,992 books listed in The National Bibliography of Indian Literature: 1901-1953 (NBIL) together with the pre-1954 titles in the NBIL supplement.
MIPP was inaugurated in 1990 by the Library of Congress and the National Library of India under an agreement between the U.S. and Indian governments.
The South Asia Microform Project at the Center for Research Libraries holds microfilm for use in the U.S. Film copies are also available at the Library of Congress.

The Sandburg Connemara transfer contains the papers of Carl Sandburg, American poet and author.
The papers also include Lombard College publications (1898-1902), material concerning the Chicago Daily News (1917-32) and a supporting book collection of approximately 5,000 volumes.
