FFC - "What is a Connemara?"
Connemara lies in an area of western Ireland known for its harsh mountainous terrain, endless desolate moors and bogs and rocky barren shores pounded by the tides and the storms of the Atlantic.
Ponies vary slightly in size and character, according to the district in which they are bred, but it is generally admitted that a compact, short-legged pony, about 13 hands 2 inches high with good shoulders and true and easy movement, is the most suitable type to develop.
The American Connemara Pony Society (A.C.P.S.) was formed "in recognition of the need for a pony of great stamina and versatility, capable of carrying an adult in the hunting field, yet gentle and tractable enough for a young child, fearless as a show jumper yet suitable and steady as a driving pony".

 Connemara Pony breeding
Though Connemara ponies may appear very similar to other breeds in many respects, they tend to be different in one important way: and that is their general ability to survive, and if necessary to work hard, in the very challenging environment of the region that has been their home for many centuries.
Connemara ponies are believed to be the descendants of the horses which the ancient Celts brought with them when they came to Ireland thousands of years ago.
A difficulty for overseas breeders of Connemara ponies is that the unique survival characteristics which the breed is famous for can rapidly become diluted when young animals are raised in areas which have less challenging environments than those found in Connemara.

How to Improve the Connemara Ponies
Recently the demand for half-bred Connemara foals has attracted buyers from beyond the confines of Ireland, with the result that some of the best mares, as well as the best foals, have been carried off.
It is, doubtless, true, that what is a loss to Connemara may be a gain to other districts; but as the demand for Connemara-bred foals is likely to increase, unless the leakage is checked, both Connemara and the rest of Ireland will eventually suffer.
If an attempt is to be made to recover for the ponies of Connemara the reputation they enjoyed up to about the middle of the nineteenth century, something more is obviously needed than sending high-class sires into the district.
