Connex is investing £15m in the introduction of convenience stores at railway stations in the south east of England, and plans to develop 40 sites over the next three years.
Connex is to close its Croydon headquarters, where it employs 120 staff, and merge it with the South Eastern office in Blackfriars.
Connex is asking the rail franchising director for an extension of its seven-year South Central franchise to 15 years to enable it to justify a £385m investment in new trains, station improvements and track electrification.

The acquisition of Connex South Central Limited by Govia Limited was agreed on 29 May 2001 and confirmed by Govia in a statement on 30 May 2001.

While CSC management was tackling the refurbishment of Sutton station (a project which kept being delayed at various stages and made sure that Connex got a series of severe beatings from the public, Sutton Council, and the local MP), the rest of the line seemed to fall into oblivion.
While CSC did improve matters by getting out some paint and cutting back shrubbery which had grown up like a jungle for years, this would be a superficial and temporary improvement only as the underlying problems were not tackled at all.
For the Epsom Downs branch, the demise of Connex was a reprieve, and not just the relief it was to so many passengers on the South Central franchise, as it is hard to imagine how the line could have survived the policy of neglect that was forced upon it by Connex much longer.

Connex operated in the South Central and South Eastern regions.
The franchise to operate these routes was due to run until 2006, but Connex South Central lost its franchise in October 2000, and in June 2003 the Strategic Rail Authority decided to cut the South Eastern franchise short at the end of 2003 due to what it called "poor financial management".
Connex is free to bid for future franchises, including the trans-Pennine franchise currently held by Arriva, which is due for renewal in September 2004.
