 Bruno Bauer
Bauer was the son of a painter in a porcelain factory, at Eisenberg in Saxe-Altenburg.He studied at Humboldt University, Berlin, where he attached himself to the "Right" of the Hegelian school under Philip Marheineke.
Bauer argued further for the preponderance of the Graeco-Roman element, as opposed to the Jewish, in the Christian writings.
Bauer was a man of restless, impetuous activity and independent, if ill-balanced, judgment, one who, as he himself perceived, was more in place as a free-lance of criticism than as an official teacher.

Conny Bauer joined him for the second number, and what started then one could call an intimate conversation between musicians, a spontaneous dialogue with far more means of expression available to it than spoken language.
Kropinski’s and Bauer’s virtuosity on their respective instruments and their art of improvisation were fed by a seemingly endless fount of innovation and creativity.
Several in the audience who had also been at the concert in July 1982 were in agreement afterwards: Bauer and Kropinski have lost nothing of their remarkable ability to whisk people off on a musical excursion far away from familiar paths.

It's also a cross-generational concordant as well, since Brooklyn-born Bergman and Dresden-born trombonist Konrad "Conny" Bauer are several decades older than the third participant, Boston-born and Brooklyn-based electric six-string violinist Mat Maneri.
Maneri, in fact, is young enough to literally be the son of either of the other musicians, if, of course, he wasn't already the scion of multi-reedist Joe Maneri, another iconoclastic free musician, in whose band he still often plays.
The only difference here is that sometimes during the course of a tune you'll suddenly realize that the two different potent pulses emanating from the piano are singularly intersecting with the violin and the trombone at the same time.

Bauer's "Sitz-und Auf Stück" for instance, has a theme that sounds like a lost Thelonious Monk number, and which contrasts long-limbed trombone smears with conga drumming, bird whistles and kazoo sounds from Sommer.
It’s also a cross-generational concordant as well, since Brooklyn-born Bergman and Dresden-born trombonist Konrad “Conny”; Bauer are several decades older than the third participant, Boston-born and Brooklyn-based electric six-string violinist Mat Maneri.
On “Suffering” he appears to be using a xylophone to counter Bauer’s gutbucket blats and Kowald’s speedy plinks, and on “Travelling” uses his tom toms to produce a Native American Indian-style beat at the end.

Intakt records Bauer, Gumpert, Petrowsky, Sommer, reviews
East German musicians Conrad Bauer on trombone, pianist Ulrich Gumpert, altoist Ernst-Ludwig Petrowsky and drummer Gunter Sommer got together in 1974, and reformed in 1984 under the name Zentralquartett – maybe the humourless GDR authorities didn't get the irony of the name's play on 'Central Committee', and the group's joyous free jazz was tolerated.
Conrad Bauer is deliciously raunchy on trombone, in one of his best representations on disc, while Ulrich Gumpert} strokes the piano keys with killer chops, Ernst Ludwig Petrowsky chimes in on reeds and flute, and the inimitable Günter Sommer rocks.

The River Of Sounds : Borah Bergman : CD Reviews : One Final Note
Borah Bergman's piano speaks in the same complex, intelligible tongue as does Conny Bauer's trombone and Mat Maneri's electric violin, resulting in a performance having dense European overtones and exciting American freeform expression.
Bauer is in an assertively gruff yet strangely gentle mode on this date.
It unites with the elegant smears of Bauer's trombone magic and Bergman's speeding piano train to form a solidified orbital sphere.

KeepMedia | JazzTimes: The River of Sounds
Every now and then, the inadequacy of language to describe a musical performance fairly well smacks you upside the head-especially when the performance in question is a free improvisation.
In the case of pianist Borah Bergman's The River of Sounds, that difficulty is all the more ironic because Bergman suggests there is a storyline underpinning the tumultuous session with German trombonist Conny Bauer and microtonal electric violinist Mat Maneri.
He supplies a brief mystery story in the CD booklet; according to Steve Lake's notes, Bergman hears The River of Sounds as an "opera," so presumably that story is the work's libretto.

The River of Sounds by Borah Bergman   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
A very unusual trio recording from pianist Borah Bergman, featuring Konrad "Conny" Bauer on trombone and Mat Maneri on electric six-string violin.
The trio introduces still more textures on two very brief selections: "The Blond Woman" pairs piano and violin in a kind of fractured ballad, while "D." closes the disc with dissonant drones from trombone and violin, with piano singing on top.
A cryptic and somewhat ominous story, which Bergman relays in the liner notes, inspired this suite of abstract compositions.
