German producer Conny Plank defines Krautrock
Dinger was an extrovert given to aggression as inspirational as it was crazed; Rother was quiet and studied, a master of minimal melody.
Plank mediated between beauty and beast, and with Neu!'s first album (recorded in four days, the first two allegedly useless), they created the Krautrock template, developing what came to be called the Motorik beat — the resolute, hypnotic, almost inhuman propulsion associated with Krautrock.
However, Plank's work with DAF and Liaisons Dangereuses started pushing those industrial sounds into what came to be known as electronic body music (EBM), which eventually mutated into German techno.

The Producers Part 16: Conny Plank — Soulmind Online Archive
One of the great unsung producers—and certainly the most important in Germany’s history — Conny Plank was integral to the electro-sheen of dozens of Krautrock gems in the 1970’s and early 1980’s, and it is difficult to imagine where today’s sounds of Berlin and Cologne would be without him.
Plank produced, engineered, mixed and performed on countless records during the era, including albums by Kraftwerk, Ash Ra Tempel, Cluster, Harmonia, Neu!, and Can — hardly a band in the country failed to pay a visit to Conny’s studio at one point or another.
Plank would go on to record several more albums with the ‘vox, but it’s this, the last record with lead singer John Foxx, that would prove to be their masterpiece.

Conny Plank was every bit the genius that any great American or Experimental producer (or, whatever hipster we're lauding this week) is. He has even been considered the Phil Spector of kraut-rock.
Most of kraut-rock owes itself to Plank, as does some of Devo and Eno's best work, and the Alexander Von Schillpenbach album that was reissued on John Corbett's Unheard Music Series not too long ago.

The music isn't as adventurous as Moebius & Plank's own albums, although you'll recognise some of their sounds, including the kind of keyboard sequencing used in Plank's production of DAF from that time ("Das Apartment," "Gestalt").
Conny's studio was reportedly very up-to-date with gear, but the emulator samples and 808 drum beats do date the CD - not to mention the early '80s "pop" elements.

Cluster - Biography - AOL Music
The most important and consistently underrated space-rock unit of the '70s, Cluster (originally Kluster) was formed by Dieter Moebius, Hans-Joachim Roedelius and Conrad Schnitzler as an improv group that used everything from synthesizers to alarm clocks and kitchen utensils in their performaces.
The group performed around Europe and even in Africa, engaging in wild improv sessions utilizing any instruments they could get their hands on; while touring they met engineer Conny Plank, soon to become a major part of Cluster's recorded output into the late '80s.
Moebius and Roedelius continued on as Cluster and, with the help of Plank, released two eponymous studio albums in 1971 and 1972.
