In 1990, Conoco constructed a 1,200-foot long concrete and synthetic liner in the southern portion of the Burlington Ditch (immediately adjacent to the Conoco refinery's western boundary), to prevent ground water/surface water mixing and to control bank erosion.
In 1993, Conoco diverted the channel of Sand Creek to isolate the surface waters from active seeps (seeps are like springs that ooze oil instead of water) and allow cleanup or removal of contaminated soil along the original channel.
In addition to the 1993 channel diversion, a new permanent channel for Sand Creek was constructed by Conoco and CRC in the area to the north and northwest of the Conoco refinery (where the creek flows from Brighton Blvd. to the Burlington Ditch).
