Sure his films are inconsistent, but the man possessed a passion for his craft, and a vision of his art, that was unwavering, inspiring, and all too rare.
In this film, however, they set up the standard scenario, then quickly knock it down by killing the weenie guy and revealing that the bad-ass guy was the chosen one all along.
This film is generally regarded as the beast that killed Fulci's career, and indeed, his output starting with this film is spotty at best.

Filmtracks: 1492: Conquest of Paradise (Vangelis)
All film scores are created for the sole purpose of complimenting their respective films, but in the case of 1492: Conquest of Paradise, Vangelis has managed to do just the opposite --an opposite that is quite difficult to obtain.
With his synthetic and choral score for this film about Christopher Columbus and his discovery of the new world, he has produced a mass hit on the record store shelves and a completely inappropriate score for the film.
Forget the film, forget the fact that this is a film score, and forget that it was a horrendous blunder in its purpose.

The Other Conquest: Film Review di Guido Mezzabotta
It is said that in the century after the conquest between 12 and 25 million Aztecs had perished by the brutal hands of the Spaniards.
The opening of "The Other Conquest," Salvador Carrasco's first film, would suggest to the viewer that one is in for a Mexican spin on the Spanish conquest with all of it's cruelty.
The end of the film signifies the beginning of the Christian-Aztec religious fusion that would eventually be realized, as Kenneth Tynan, film critic of the LA Times, states, "as the apparition of the Virgin of Guadalupe; a Virgin with Aztec features.

In the 50s, Pal was the prime innovator in science fiction cinema, and not just in terms of special effects - although he certainly was the king of the effects movie at the time, launching an entire craze of then-modern sci-fi with his works of sheer spectacle.
Granted, many effects shots pale in comparison to today’s films, but no matter; they were amazing for their time and deserve much praise for their breakthrough status.
In “Conquest,” one character quite unexpectedly decides mid-mission that such a journey is an abomination against God.

Unfortunately, of the various films which were made to commemorate the event, all fell short of their objectives and most ended up being mauled, deservedly, by the critics.
Where the film fails most notably is in the characterisation, which is only reinforced by poor dialogue and some unfortunate casting decisions.
The most frustrating thing about this film is that, despite all the talent that went into it, it had to end up such a mediocre work, one which does a great disservice to the historic event it attempts to commemorate.

I think a lot of people would argue that this is the role of the film critic, but I'd offer that a critic--a good one--loves film so much that he or she is offended when a movie is terrible.
The films don't really belong to him anymore once they belong to us, you see, and the lack of respect he's showing to our memories and pleasures is worse than just larceny, it's something as indecent and invasive as emotional rape.
Conquest on the other hand is all but forgotten, resurrected by Blue Underground in a presentation that should warm the hearts of Fulci completists everywhere.

With all the accomplished musicians, conductors and film composers in the family - Alfred, David, Emil, Lionel, Maria, Randy and Thomas - it would be difficult to choose just one.
Today, as many bemoan a decline in the quality of film music and as collections of pop songs often take the place of orchestral scores, the younger Newmans - particularly Alfred's sons David and Thomas and their cousin, Randy - are seen as stalwart defenders of the struggling art form.
While many early film composers wrote music that meticulously followed a movie's action, Alfred developed a style that underscored mood more than the specifics of a given scene.
