Reporting from the road the day after the opening date, Conrad Lozano from Los Lobos praised every single act on the bill with reviews ranging from a lofty "pretty great" for Wilco to an enthusiastic "amazing" for Van Allen Belt.
After almost 25 years of road work, Los Lobos are the veterans here, but Lozano can recall only four or five other tours that even came close to the charming vibe of ARA.
Lozano's experience with U2 several years back was, he says, "the perfect example of the opposite of what this tour's like.

I ASKED Los Lobos bassist Conrad Lozano about the time the band opened for the Clash in Oakland back in the '80s.
He felt nervous, yet amazed, about the audience response: "They gave us the finger and spat at us." No stranger to punk crowds, having played with X and the Blasters, the band soldiered on until denser projectiles zipped by.
Lozano has resigned himself to the fact that Los Lobos' big hit, "La Bamba," will probably be remembered over Ritchie Valens' version.

Los Lobos, a band that ranks as one of the most eclectic in rock history, chose to limit itself to one dimension during its acoustic performance at the Pabst Theater last week.
The show began with the four founding Lobos - guitarist-singers Cesar Rosas, Louie Perez and David Hidalgo and bassist Conrad Lozano - reliving the early days before moving on to material from their 1978 self-released album "Just Another Band From East L.A." and the title track from "La Pistola".

And so Los Lobos was born, a band of young men just out of their teens trying to learn their way around such exotic and foreign instruments as the guitarron and the bajo sexto, even as they struggled to maintain their chops in the rock-and-roll side of things.
If Los Lobos began, as Lozano says, as some sort of reaction to the burgeoning Chicano-roots movement of the early 1970s, then a decade later, its members learned how to mesh their rock-and-roll influences with their norte—o and corrida infatuations with such ease you'd never know there was much of a difference.

As soon as the old laser needle drops on "Done Gone Blue," cut one of Los Lobos' new outing, the listener is grabbed by Conrad Lozano's propelling bassline, kept bobbing and tapping by Louie Perez' popping snare shots, and smacked about the head and shoulders by David Hidalgo's electric guitar.
Riding another pumping bassline by Conrad Lozano, abetted by guest drummer Pete Thomas on rifle-pop snare, the title track is a sleek, rocking vehicle for this lyric of life in the barrio.
The libretto is basically "be it ever so humble, there's no place like home," but done in revealing vignette: "A red rooster crows a little Mexican tune/On the chain link fence by the gate." This should be the lead video (if they still do those nowadays) because it is an undeniable, thundering classic.
