He was born in Dallas, Texas, the eldest son of Conrad Nicholson Hilton and Mary Adelaide Barron.
Hilton was married twice, first to actress Elizabeth Taylor (married on May 6, 1950 – divorced in 1951), who divorced him due to physical abuse; and secondly to oil heiress Patricia "Trish" McClintock (married on November 26, 1958 – divorced in 1965).
Hilton died of a heart attack in West Los Angeles, California, at the age of forty-two, probably precipitated by substance abuse.
