Biography - Conrad Plank (Bio 781)
Conrad Plank is to Krautrock what Phil Spector is to pop music, an inventive producer and collaborator with credits that range from the endlessly influential rock records that came from Germany in the '70s to obscure and not-so-obscure post-punk/new wave records of the late '70s and early '80s.
Having cut his teeth working for Marlene Dietrich in the '40s, it wasn't until his production for Kraftwerk's early records that he began to significantly raise his status.
Plank, who also worked with Dieter Moebius on a couple of early '80s recordings billed as Moebius & Plank, passed away in the late '80s.

Organisation "Tone Float", Kraftwerk "KRAFTWERK" 1970
It was co-produced and engineered by Conrad Plank with the assistance of Klaus Löhmer.
Plank did believe very strongly in the pioneering music of Kraftwerk and he helped with the recording process often for little or no remuneration.
When released in late 1970 the LP sleeve was designed by Ralf and showcased their adopted trademark - the traffic cone.

When last we left our Düsseldorfer heroes, Michael Rother and Klaus Dinger, they had left Kraftwerk, overcome their fear of broccoli, saved Camp Chippewa from the machinations of an unscrupulous real estate developer, and recorded a masterpiece that would influence independent music for decades to come.
The year is 1973, and again the dynamic duo is holed up in a studio with Can/Kraftwerk producer Conrad Plank to record their sophomore effort.
The track proceeds as if Plank somehow turned up the gravity in the studio: the percussion becomes slower and heavier, as the guitars grow emptier.

Conrad Schnitzler (an original member of Tangerine Dream and Kluster) was a regular guest in this series and several graphic novels.
In the early 1980s, Matt did a minicomic series entitled "The Comix of Two Cities", based on lifeforms created by the Residents in the band's "Mark of the Mole" trilogy of albums.
Matt has done cover art for numerous independent musical releases (cassette tapes, albums, and compact discs); among them: Conrad Schnitzler, the Nightcrawlers, the Muffins, and Scornflakes.

Kraftwerk - Kraftwerk 1 (1971)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-29)
What's clearly missing from Kraftwerk is the predominance of clipped keyboard melodies that later versions of the band would make their own.
Instead, Kraftwerk is an exploratory art rock album with psych roots first and foremost, with Conny Plank's brilliant co-production and engineering skills as important as the band performances.
The connection is important, given that Neu!'s Klaus Dinger is one of the two drummers; the roots of the motorik trance and tripped-out ambient wash of the later band can clearly be heard throughout.

A History of German Rock Music
Tangerine Dream (15), formed in Berlino by guitarist Edgar Froese, percussionist Klaus Schulze and keyboardist Conrad Schnitzler, were among the earliest conscious explorers of a new musical universe opened by electronic instruments.
Renamed Cluster (with producer Conrad Plank replacing Schnitzler), which is also the title of Cluster (1971), the trio began to indulge in velvety drones, distorted reverbs, cyclic repetitions and tonal poetry, thus aiming for a form of contemplation instead of Kluster's abstract painting.
The electronic suites of Rot (1973) by Conrad Schnitzler (1), a founding member of both Cluster and Tangerine Dream, are closer to Morton Subotnick's avantgarde electronica than to cosmic music.

To Cluster, where the spelling of the bands name would not be the only change, inspired by Schnitzler's departure Roedelius recruited luminaries such as Brian Eno and Michael Rother (NEU!) to fill the vacant position.
Later Roedelius continued such impressive collaborations by working with Holger Czukay (Can), Conrad Plank (Krautrock producer extraordinaire) and reuniting with Mobius to form Harmonia.
He even dabbled in spatial art with Gilbert Bretterbauer and has formed alliances with some of the most interesting names in modern-day composition (Fabio Capanni, Jurij Novoselic, Hiroshi Kobayashi, Andres Gil to name but a few).

In summer 1971, we booked a studio to record the second Kraftwerk album with Conny Plank as co-producer, and we tried hard to recreate the atmosphere of our live performances but failed completely.
This frustration added to the conflicts we had already had, and it became clear that Florian was going into a different musical direction than Klaus and me, who felt we had a similar goal.

In 1969 the three founded Kluster, which after two years and three records, Roedelius and Moebius continued as Cluster, whose work is easily as earth-shaking, and relevant today as that of Can, Tangerine Dream, Neu!, Faust, Kraftwerk and company.
From his early work with the pioneering Krautrock band Kluster to his later solo recordings, Dieter Moebius remained one of the most innovative and prolific voices in contemporary electronic music, anticipating movements from ambient to techno years before the fact.
Roedelius and Moebius subsequently worked with Eno on 1977's Cluster and Eno and 1979's After the Heat as well; in the wake of 1981's Curiosum, however, they dissolved Cluster, with both pursuing solo endeavors.

Review: Neu! | NEU! / NEU! 2 / NEU! 75 by Simon Berkovitch
The austere wah-wah guitar of Rother, wrenched from its familiar funk credentials, ekes out its stoic mantra over the persuasively minimal percussion of Dinger, a drummer fresh out of the Maureen Tucker school of thought.
But, the other eye is glaring proudly into the future, with the Sex Pistols-esque ramalama of Hero and After Eight.
This reissue enhances Conrad Plank’s pop production of the album and one wonders how the landscape of the 1970s may have changed if Rother and Dinger’s muse had rattled furiously to the top of the charts.

Burns said his comments had been misinterpreted because he was talking about a charity fundraising event known as a “slave auction.”
