The Pit Bull, Bull Terrier and similar breeds were the result of breeding by farmers to produce an exceptional all around dog.

Stubby(1917-1926): This Pit Bull, of unknown descent, was found by Private John Robert Conroy on the campus of Yale University, in 1917, while training for deployment to the European front of WWI.
Private Conroy was not willing to abandon Stubby when he left so instead he smuggled his beloved dog aboard the passenger truck that was transporting the men to the train depot.
Private Conroy nestled Stubby, who had grown quite a bit since he was first discovered in the training camp, under his arm and draped his coat over his shoulder so it would hang down his body and conceal Stubby.

So, the pit bull is, after all, just a “bull dog” and a “terrier.” Strong, agile and very intelligent, these crossbred dogs were, by nature, extremely loyal to their masters.
Because it was necessary for handlers to be able to separate dogs in the pit, dogs displaying aggression toward humans were not serviceable and were quickly culled, leaving a breed characterized by human friendliness and stability.
The pit bull now had a new master, and in ever-increasing numbers, he was mis-bred, mis-treated, mis-directed, abused and then cast off…fueling the media fire.

Animal Farm Foundation | A Popular History of the Pit Bull in America
Known as the Staffordshire Terrier in his native England, the pit bull descended from the old English bulldogge, or butcher’s dog, an animal bred down from the Middle Ages to participate in the cruel “sport” of baiting bulls, bears, and other animals.
Pit Bulls often lived as family members and their reliability with children earned the nickname “nursemaid’s dog” or “nanny dog”.
Advertising featuring the pit bull sprang up—Tige was selling Buster Brown shoes; a young boy and his pit bull were selling Levi’s jeans; and Nipper, the fl-and-white pit bull of an English artist called Barraud, was making American advertising history as the dog in RCA Victor’s “His Master’s Voice”.

 Haverford College
Conroy, a Haverford grad and Director of the Iowa Writers' Workshop, a literary lab which he helped make as famous as Elia Kazan's and Lee Strasberg's Actors' Studio in New York, died April 6 of colon cancer: "He loved young people," says his second wife, Maggie Conroy.
The great criticism of him, voiced off-record by even one of his ex-colleagues in Iowa, was that Frank never delivered on his youthful promise: "After Stop-Time — which everyone agreed was wonderful — he became something of a marginal figure in American letters, despite his great contributions at the Workshop," the former acquaintance says.
Conroy, like Giuseppe di Lampedusa (The Leopard)— or, it could be argued more dangerously, J. Salinger — was an "amateur" in the highest sense...like James Agee and Celine, he seemed compelled to tell a natural truth, rather than evolve plots, characters, and tend his own professional garden.
