Topic: Conscience of a Conservative

American conservatism - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Conservative," argued in his 1960 Conscience of a Conservative that conservatives split on the issue of civil rights due to some conservatives advocating ends (integration, even in the face of what they saw as unconstitutional Federal involvement) and some advocating means (constitutionality above all else, even in the face of segregation).
Conservatives, out of their respect for traditional, established institutions, tend to strongly identify with nationalist movements, existing governments, and its defenders: police, the military, and national poets, authors, and artists.
The archetypal free-market conservative administrations of the late 20th century -- the Margaret Thatcher government in the UK and the Ronald Reagan government in the U.S. -- both held the unfettered operation of the market to be the cornerstone of contemporary modern conservatism (this philosophy is sometimes called neoliberalism).

The Conscience of a Conservative was an original work of politics and philosophy, a vision of the nation and the world as it should be, not a compromise with the world as it was.
The Conservative is the first to understand that the practice of freedom requires the establishment of order: it is impossible for one man to be free if another is able to deny him the exercise of his freedom.
Conservatives are often charged, and in a sense rightly so, with having an overly mechanistic view of the Constitution: "It is America’s enabling document; we are American citizens; therefore," the Conservatives’ theme runs, "we are morally and legally obliged to comply with the document." All true.

Barry Goldwater - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
He was criticized in 1964 as a radical reactionary, yet he energized a conservative grass roots movement which sixteen years later helped to nominate and elect Ronald Reagan.
Since conservative Southern Democrats were the main opponents to the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and previous civil rights legislation, his opposition to the Act strongly boosted Goldwater's standing among white southerners.
Conservative activist Phyllis Schlafly, later well known for her fight against the Equal Rights Amendment, first became known for writing a pro-Goldwater book, "A Choice, Not an Echo," attacking the liberal Republican establishment.

T the beginning of the 1960s conservatives were in a better position than at any time since the 1930s to challenge moderate Republicans for control of the party.
Not only were conservatives widely viewed as wild-eyed fanatics but they squabbled among themselves, had trouble articulating a positive program of reform, had few grassroots organizations, and lacked the funding to make the movement a serious political force.
Nixon was not an ideological conservative, but to gain the nomination he had to appeal to the party's new conservative majority.

The presiding theme of the chapters of this book is the conservative's awareness of the fallibility of human design and the recurrence, in human affairs, of unintended and unwanted consequences.
The book has both a message and a mood -- both words and music -- and the music is the stately, subdued sound of the viola and the cello, not the triumphant blare of the brass or the soaring creations of the clarinet or the saxophone.

THE CONSCIENCE OF A CONSERVATIVE was written to answer the question of why a conservative nation, such as the United States, was governed by liberal policy-makers.
Goldwater believed it was because conservative principles-though predominant among the people-were lacking in eloquent defenders willing to demonstrate their applicability to contemporary problems.
Conservative wisdom, as Goldwater points out, comes from the laws of God and the laws of nature, laws that "have no dateline," and that provide ready guidelines to issues revolving around power, federalism, civil rights, the welfare state, education, and communism.

Schiller differentiates the conservative empiricist from his counterpart, the metaphysicist, by subtly messaging their respective notions of truth: for the Wilhelmsens, the rejection of Leftist relativism demands transcendental truth, for the Zolls, transrational.
The crux, Schiller's mission, is to determine a "workable conservative theory of change." This is accomplished by deep study of philosophical influences on historical occurrences which in turn yields a national attitude.
