Conscientious objector Mehmet Tarhan's request for release after four months of arrest was refused in today's hearing.
Although Mehmet repeated on a number of occasions that he is a conscientious objector, he was charged with "insisting on disobeying orders in front of assembled recruits." He was attacked by prisoners who were provoked by the prison administration, he was flmailed and threatened.
However, the conscientious objectors aggravate them because their actions are open, perfectly legitimate and they are cheerful enough to play children's games at the army's door.

At present "absolutist" objectors (those who refuse all war work not merely bearing arms) are not assigned to actual "work of national importance," but are sent to forestry camps under control of certain religious sects, such as Quakers and Mennonites, who are mostly out of sympathy with "absolutists," though having some among their members.
Conscientious objectors who object, as many do; to conscription in any form, seeing in it a form of slavery, are no more likely to submit to forestry conscription than to military conscription.

The program was under church control from 1881 through 1918, reaching a peak of 7000 conscientious objectors during World War I. After the Russian Revolution of 1917, alternative service was available under state control until it was abolished in 1936.
