What is the Consecration of a Virgin   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-24)
The Consecration of a Virgin is one of the oldest sacramentals in the Church, and one of the fruits of Vatican II was the restoration of this profound blessing on virgins living in the world.
The consecrated virgin shares intimately in the nature and mission of the Church--she is a living image of the Church's love for her Spouse while sharing in His redemptive mission.
She must be admitted to this Consecration by her local Bishop; it is he who determines the conditions under which the candidate is to undertake a life of perpetual virginity lived in the world.

The greatest glory of virgins is undoubtedly to be the living images of the perfect integrity of the union between the Church and her divine Spouse.

 Dorothy Dohen’s Reclamation of Virginity
Mary’s virginity, as well as her Immaculate Conception, qualified her to be the mother of the incarnate Savior.
Because she had to work out for herself the problem of being a laywoman claiming a personal vocation of virginity, Dohen could articulate clearly the difference between the vocation of consecrated virginity and the situation of singleness.
Recalling the lives of the consecrated virgins who lived during the few centuries prior to the emergence of structured religious orders, Dohen claimed for herself an ancient precedent for the life of freedom and union with God.

 Mary: Ever Virgin
However, due to considerations of ceremonial cleanliness, it was eventually necessary for Mary, a consecrated "virgin of the Lord," to have a guardian or protector who would respect her vow of virginity.
The gravity of his responsibility as the guardian of a virgin was indicated by the fact that, when she was discovered to be with child, he had to answer to the Temple authorities, who thought him guilty of defiling a virgin of the Lord.
Today most Protestants are unaware of these early beliefs regarding Mary’s virginity and the proper interpretation of "the brethren of the Lord." And yet, the Protestant Reformers themselves—Martin Luther, John Calvin, and Ulrich Zwingli—honored the perpetual virginity of Mary and recognized it as the teaching of the Bible, as have other, more modern Protestants.

Furthermore, Protestants believe the consecrated virginity of priests and nuns to be an extra-Scriptural overcompensation on the part of the Catholic Church that was instituted for two reasons.
The fact that virginity is prized and honored in God's sight doesn't necessarily mean that Mary was a consecrated virgin or that she volunteered (or even needed) to stay a virgin after Jesus' birth to maintain her honored status.
Denial of her consecrated virginity (Luke 1:34) takes that which is esteemed of God (Matt 19:11-12, 1Cor 7:38) and leads to it's being held in contempt.
