	The Jane Goodall Institute
		In 1967 the Gombe Stream Research Center (GSRC) was founded to coordinate the study of the wild chimpanzee populations.
		Research has been concentrated in both the central and more recently northern portions of Gombe National Park, although it is also known that there is at least one unhabituated community of chimpanzees currently living in the southern area of the park.
		Jane Goodall Institute's Center for Primate Studies was established at the University of Minnesota in 199 5 by Dr. Anne Pusey, Distinguished McKnight Professor in the College of Biological Sciences Department of Ecology, Evolution, and Behavior.

	Smithsonian: Spotlight on Science
		Research by Marion Mecklenburg and Charles Tumosa of the Smithsonian Center for Materials Research and Education (SCMRE) has shown that the recommended environmental limits are unnecessarily stringent, and in some cases have actually damaged museum property.
		Researchers sometimes refer to Titan's atmosphere as a possible analogue to the atmosphere of the early Earth, particularly in regard to pre-biotic chemistry.
		CRC research and animal care staff have been involved in all aspects of the SSP for this species since the program’s inception, and Derrickson serves on the SSP's Management Committee and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's Recovery Team.

		Not surprisingly, the National Zoo's CRC has a similar agenda focusing on the "collection." Founded in 1975 in Front Royal, Virginia, the CRC is interested in zoo-management practices, healthy environments for animals in zoos, and exemplary techniques of veterinary medicine.
		The CRC and the Zoo are thus leaders in the relatively new field of conservation biology, and their activities relate to similar ecological undertakings at the National Museum of Natural History, the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center on the Chesapeake Bay, and the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute, in Panama.
		A chief activity of the CRC is spawning its collection (by natural breeding and artificial insemination) as well as producing members of endangered species for other zoos and for release in the wild.

	USGS National Wetlands Research Center: Conservation Genetics
		Conservation genetics is a relatively new field of biology that attempts to combine the sciences of ecology and genetics.
		Research in this field is producing information that can aid in the preservation of the genetic diversity of plant and animal populations which may be important to the ability of species to adapt to environmental change.
		In forestry, conservation geneticists are interested in the distribution of genetic variation among and within forest stands, gene exchange among stands, and the preservation of natural and cultivated forest populations as genetic resources for future use.

		The Conservation Department of the Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center is charged with the care of the Center's collections.
		Although each conservator and technician is skilled in a particular specialty such as book, paper or photograph conservation, box making, or exhibit preparation, all are equally engaged with preservation, exhibition and access for the full range of objects in the collections.

	A close call for the National Zoo's Conservation and Research Center - June 15, 2001
		He proposed that some CRC programs and positions could be transferred to the National Zoo, but many felt that the open, rural landscape of the center was the only place to conduct research successfully.
		On the eve of May 7, Sec Small withdrew the proposal to close the center, stating that, although his intention initially was to save the substantial cost of managing the center, that message was lost in the backlash from members of the scientific community, the Smithsonian, Congress, and the media.
		A voice from the center itself came from Chris Wemmer, PhD and associate director for conservation at the CRC.

		The Smithsonian Institution says it will continue operating its Conservation and Research Center, which had been targeted last month for closure after 26 years as one of the world's leading conservation biology centers.
		In a statement, Small said he reversed his position "because it was clear from the messages we received from individuals and organizations around the country that the proposal was interpreted by many as indicating that the Smithsonian was backing away from its commitment to science in general, and to the biological sciences in particular."
		The CRC facility, which is not open to the public, has been used by scientists from throughout the USA and approximately 80 other countries.

		While spending time at the Smithsonian's Conservation and Research Center (CRC) near Front Royal, Virginia, writer Scott Weidensaul discovered that conservation biologists will go to extraordinary lengths to help the world's most endangered animals.
		Along with the ferrets, Weidensaul reports, CRC has worked with Phre David's deer from China, Przewalski's horse from the Mongolian steppe, tree kangaroos from New Guinea, red-crowned cranes from Russia and China, and clouded leopards and red pandas from Asia.
		The Conservation and Research Center is marking its 25th anniversary this year, a quarter-century that has seen tremendous changes in the way scientists approach the subject of endangered species propagation and conservation.

		Zoo scientists integrate these data with their own extensive field research to monitor and assess the effects of habitat loss on these focal species.
		Recently the Zoo’s Conservation GIS lab has started to integrate all of these data in a computer-mapping system to identify priority sites for conservation, using the Asian elephant as a prototype species.

	New coastal research center to aid wildlife conservation in Texas
		HOUSTON, June 4, 2002 — A new conservation and research center established by a private ranch and the University of Houston will provide a location for environmental studies aimed at protecting the natural resources and wildlife on the Texas coast.
		The center will provide university faculty and students with a site for Texas coastal conservation research and the development of techniques to safeguard the fragile natural resources on the coast.
		The universities are the University of Houston, a nationally recognized doctoral degree-granting, comprehensive research university; the University of Houston-Downtown, a four-year undergraduate university beginning limited expansion into graduate programs; and the University of Houston-Clear Lake and the University of Houston-Victoria, both upper division and master's-level institutions.
