Conservation area - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A conservation area is a tract of land that has been awarded protected status in order to ensure that natural features or biota are safeguarded.
A conservation area may be a nature reserve, a park, a land reclamation project, or other area.
In the United Kingdom, conservation area is often the name designation given to nature reserves.

Ministry of Culture: Note #7: Making the Case for Heritage Designation to a Property Owner
Designation does not require an owner to restore a property to its original condition or its appearance in an earlier period.
Designation requires a property owner to seek the approval of municipal council, in consultation with its LACAC where one exists, for any property alteration which affects the "reasons for designation".
Designation requires the property owner to seek the permission of municipal council, in consultation with its LACAC where one exists, to demolish a designated structure.

Conservation biologists have demonstrated that populations at the edge of a species' distribution can be important sources of genetic variation and represent the best opportunity for colonization or re- colonization of unoccupied vernal pools and, thus, long-term conservation (Gilpin and Soule 1986; Lande 1999).
Conservation of a population of the Riverside fairy shrimp in the coastal region of Los Angeles County is essential to the conservation of the species.
The designation may have some benefit to these governments in that the areas essential to the conservation of the species are more clearly defined, and the primary constituent elements of the habitat necessary to the survival of the species are specifically identified.

 Designation of Consevation Planning Units
A basic issue is the designation of conservation planning units.
The physiographic area is a sensible conservation planning unit because vegetative communities, bird populations, and species assemblages, as well as land use and conservation issues, tend to be more uniform within than across physiographic areas.
All of the responsibilities for accomplishing conservation actions should be adopted by one or a combination of the partners in the state working group.

Planning Advice Note PAN 71: Conservation Area Management: page 3   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
Designation of a conservation area should not be regarded principally as a means of increasing control but rather as a commitment to take positive action to safeguard and enhance the character and appearance of the conservation area.
Wherever possible, proposals to designate, cancel or redefine the boundaries of conservation areas should first be subject to public consultation through the local plan process, thus providing opportunity for the views of stakeholders to be taken into account.
Whilst designation is a valuable tool in the protection of important areas, authorities should be careful not to assume that designation alone will secure protection and enhancement.

2004 Federal Register, 69 FR 53182; Centralized Library: U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service - FR Doc 04-19501
Designation and management of critical habitat will place an additional burden on land management agencies, further inhibiting their ability to prevent or suppress catastrophic wildfire, one of the greatest threats to the forest types this species inhabits.
Areas outside the critical habitat designation will continue to be subject to conservation actions that may be implemented under section 7(a)(1) and to the regulatory protections afforded by the section 7(a)(2) jeopardy standard and the section 9 take prohibition, as determined on the basis of the best available information at the time of the action.
The resulting lands in the designation are determined to be essential to the conservation of the species, for which justification for their inclusion and the potential benefits to the species from the designation are discussed throughout our proposed rule and this final rule.

 National Marine Conservation Area
The newest designation being considered for a portion of the lake would include it in an ambitious project under way across Canada to create 29 National Marine Conservation Areas (NMCAs) that recognize, and regulate, distinct marine expanses.
Under study as an NMCA are the waters that extend from Thunder Cape straight south to the mid-lake Canada-U.S. border and all waters from the border north and east along the coastline to Bottle Point, northeast of the Slate Islands.
Designation of this portion of Lake Superior would mean no mining of “nonrenewable” resources within the high-water mark on the mainland or islands within designated areas, he says.

 Conservation Biology
Conservation biology emerged as an organized academic discipline in the United States in the 1980s though much of its theoretical framework was originally developed in Australia.
Conservation has a better chance of success in the latter case since, with large populations, it is usually possible to design field experiments with appropriate controls to determine the ecological mechanisms of decline.
Note that what biota are considered to be of conservation interest is typically not entirely determined by biology: charismatic species, including those of symbolic social value, such as national birds and animals, are often selected for attention irrespective of the intrinsic biological importance of their conservation.

FR Doc 05-4173   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
During the development of the final designation, we reviewed the lands proposed as critical habitat based on public comments and any new information that may have become available and refined the boundaries of the proposal to remove lands determined not to be essential to the conservation of the 15 vernal pool species.
We then took into consideration the potential economic impacts of the designation, impacts on national security, and other relevant factors such as partnerships, existing management of the lands being considered, and the effect of designation on the conservation of the species whose critical habitat was covered by the designation.
Designation of critical habitat does not afford protection to species or habitat unless there is a federal nexus, lands protected under HCPs are protected regardless of the designation of critical habitat.

Planning applications made for development should show how the proposals preserve and enhance the character of the area, and demonstrate that the proposals are in sympathy with the surroundings.  Special attention should be given to the design, scale and use of the materials, so that the existing character of the area is not damaged.
The Planning Service is required to publicise details and invite comments on all planning applications made in Conservation Areas.  This is done by neighbour notifications, consulting the Parish Council, advertising in the local press and by displaying site notices.
