Becoming a profession: conservation in the United Kingdom - Stan Lester   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
Conservation forms a reasonably recognisable occupation both in the United Kingdom and internationally, although there are grey areas where conservation blurs into restoration and to an extent into craft occupations, building professions and curatorial functions.
Professional associations of conservators and restorers date from the late 1940s onwards, and codes of practice and ethics emerged during the 1960s with the Charter of Venice in 1964 and the International Institute for Conservation American Group code of ethics in 1967.
Generally, it is important that conservators and their associations place the idea of 'being professional' in the changing contexts both of professions in society and the market, and of the particular context of conservation practice, rather than embarking on an agenda linked to inappropriate or out-of-date notions of what professions are and how they operate.

As early as 1948 the United States had proposed an international solution to territorial claims in Antarctica by which Antarctica would be governed by a trusteeship under the United Nations, but the proposal drew slight interest from only two of the claimants, the United Kingdom and New Zealand.
The United States ratified this convention in 1984 when Congress passed the Antarctic Marine Living Resources Convention Act (P.L. A similar scenario is unfolding for target 2 of the global plant conservation strategy; that is, the preparation of a preliminary assessment of the conservation status of each of the world's known plant species.
Those individual conservation ratings are scientific assessments of the likely threats to a species based on data such as its distribution pattern and the sorts of habitats in which it occurs.
I have drawn attention to targets 1 and 2 of the global strategy for plant conservation because I believe that they illustrate one of the key points to be drawn from the sub-committee's report: that a sound scientific information base must underlie any rational and worthwhile activity in the area of conservation.
