Conservative Baptists is a name used to describe members of the Conservative Baptist Association of America (an association formed in 1947 at Atlantic City, New Jersey), used loosely as the larger "Conservative Baptist Movement", or used as a description of Baptists that hold a "conservative" viewpoint of theology in contrast to "liberals".
The terminology is often applied to members of the Southern Baptist Convention, whose recent history has seen a struggle between "conservatives" and "moderates".
But "conservative" Baptists can usually be expected to accept the inerrancy of the Bible, the Genesis account of creation, the virgin birth, perfect life and substitutionary atonement of Christ, and His literal return.

At the annual meetings of Conservative Baptists held in Portland, Oregon, in 1953, the so-called "Portland Manifesto" was adopted.
In the document, which was agreed to by the CBA and the two mission agencies, the Conservative Baptist movement was declared to be "separatist in spirit and objective." However, the passage of years began to reveal that many Conservative Baptists were not nearly as separatistic as this document might seem to suggest.

Of course, even if it was a Baptist Union church he attended, all Baptist churches are autonomous and the one he attended may have a special rule that is not the norm I witnessed.
However, usually the only requirement for a Baptist church to join an association is that the church agrees with the association's confession of faith.

The weak and faulty organiza­tion of the Conservative Baptist Association of America with its dual affiliation was intended only to be a temporary arrangement, but it did allow pastors still affiliated with the American Baptist Convention to have strategic places of leadership on the CBA Boards.
The CBA was dominated by ecclesiastical politics explained in detail by Dr. Ernest Pickering’s paper, Betrayal on the Boardwalk, and manifested in repeated requests by the “soft‑core” for the separatists to leave.
