Conservative modernisers point to Afriyie's election as evidence that the party is changing, though opponents argue that the election of a single fl MP doesn't count for much against the perceived right-wing anti-immigrant campaign fought by the Conservatives in 2005.

Conservative Party (UK) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Though the Conservative Party was in government for two-thirds of the twentieth century and is often referred to as the 'natural party of government', they have been in opposition in Parliament since losing the 1997 election to the Labour Party under Tony Blair.
The internal organisation of the Conservative Party is a contrast between the grassroots constituency groups who dominate in the election of party leaders, and the members of the Conservative Central Office who lead in financing, the organisation of elections, and drafting of policy.
Although Thatcher herself was socially conservative and a practising Methodist, her supporters harbour a range of social opinions from the libertarian views of Michael Portillo to the traditional conservatism of William Hague and David Davis.

New Labour’s move away from traditional socialist policies towards the centre of the left/right spectrum demonstrated ...
Our hypothesis is that Labour’s traditional constituency in the working class will not have responded with enthusiasm to New Labour’s apparent lack of c oncern with their interests, and may have shown a greater reluctance to turn out and vote for the party.
Table 5 shows that the Conservative pattern in 1997 was a straightforward repeat of the Conservative pattern in the previous four elections, although as expected in all three groups abstention is s omewhat higher than previously.
The Labour pattern, however, is rather different from previous years: Labour abstention was actually lower in the core middle-class core in 1997 than it had been previously, down by 4 points, while it rose by four points i n the working-class core.

Labour Party (UK) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Labour won a landslide 179 seat majority in the 1997 general election under the leadership of Tony Blair—its first general election victory since October 1974 and the first general election since 1970 in which it had exceeded 40% of the popular vote.
The Labour party returned to government with a wafer-thin 4 seat majority under Harold Wilson in the 1964 election, and increased their majority to 98 in 1966 election remaining in power until the 1970 election which contrary to expectations during the campaign they lost.
Labour in the 1960s made major steps in introducing the permissive society notably the legalisation of homosexuality and abortion, and the abolition of the death penalty (except for a small number of offences - notably High Treason) and various legislation addressing race relations and racial discrimination.

Hoover Institution - Hoover Digest - Labour’s Labor Problem
Finally in 1997—after 18 unbroken years in power—the Conservative Party was swept from office by a Labour electoral landslide led by Tony Blair, who became prime minister; and with Labour’s return to office came union leaders’ hopes that “their” government would restore a significant measure of their influence and participation.
This idea was agreed on jointly by the Labour Party and the union movement during their years in the political wilderness during the depression of the 1930s and the war years.
By the end of the 1970s, with a Labour government in power, the whole relationship essentially collapsed as the unions staged massive strikes during the winter of 1978–79, which came to be known aptly as the Winter of Discontent.

New research by the Conservatives has revealed the scandalous extent to which Labour have skewed public funds to its own strongholds, while cutting services in Conservative and Lib Dem constituencies.
Analysis shows that in Conservative areas, Labour are cutting the number of community hospitals, reducing the number of hospital beds; closing Post Office branches, slashing rail services, and planning to impose higher property taxes.
He spoke out after research revealed that of the 81 community hospitals under threat of cutbacks or closure, 62 are in Conservative constituencies, 8 are in Liberal Democrat seats, while just 11 are in Labour seats.

Thus in Profile 1 there would be a runoff between Labour and Conservative, which Conservative wins because the voters who most prefer the eliminated Liberal candidate all prefer Conservative to Labour and they are sufficient in number to overcome the Labour margin over Conservative with respect to first preferences.
Conservative remains the plurality runoff winner but Labour becomes the Borda point winner, while approval voting remains indeterminate.
Labour wins if voting is sincere (demonstrating that Borda Point Voting can deny victory to a majority [and Condorcet] winner, i.e., Conservative), but the 54 Conservative-preferring voters can elect Conservative if they shove Labour down to third place on their ballots.

Comment Central - Times Online - WBLG: Conservative Party
Conservative spokesmen are apparently allowed to say vindictive and merciless things about the way middle-class parents raise their children, but those who take the assault personally must remain constructive and helpful in their response.
Conservatives presented the commentariat with a target to die for by flinging their party into a perfectly executed suicide mission.
So let's get this straight: it is now the official Conservative view that parents who struggle and sacrifice their time and money in the interests of helping their children to get on in life are a problem.

ConservativeHome's Platform: Adam Tugwell: Labour vs. Conservative = Equality vs. Opportunity
This of course is far from an accurate portrayal, but I nonetheless often ask myself why Labour has so successfully walked away with the prize given to the group of politicians who most effectively sell themselves as caring most about the disadvantaged and the people who experience a rum deal in their everyday lives.
Paradoxically, New Labour have successfully created a ravenous mindset that leaves many thinking that being famous or that having a glamorous occupation are the only things that will give you value in the eyes of others and that these successes just arrive in your lap.
Back in 1997 New Labour came into government, with a subtle but none-the-less distinct, shift to the ‘right’, effectively taking the ground from under the feet of a Conservative Party, which was in total disarray after losing the election.

 New Labour, New Tactical Voting
Evidently the Labour landslide and Liberal Democrat revival of 1997 were as much a product of the operation of the single member plurality electoral system as an indicator of the strength of their electoral support.
Given the position of Labour and the Liberal Democrats in the polls, people in these constituencies may not always have been convinced that a vote for the Liberal Democrats was an effective means of defeating the Conservatives, and this is reflected in our classification.
Conservative supporters similarly became more positive towards Labour (up 0.70) and less so to their own party (down 0.30), while Labour supporters, although generally more constant over time, expressed a more positive view of the Liberal Democrats in 1997 than in 1992 (up 0.32).

PETER MANDELSON warns Labour today not to throw away its grip on power as the European centre-left parties have by losing its nerve and failing to crack down on immigration, antisocial behaviour and crime.
New Labour had successfully added fairness and opportunity to this Thatcherite economic prudence, he says, but must now move into traditional right-wing territory on immigration and welfare with tough policies rather than pandering to prejudice.
In a veiled message to Labour rebels in the week the controversial Asylum and Immigration Bill returns to the Commons, he says that the European Left was only defeated by a resurgent Right because of disunity, weak leadership and a lack of courage.
