American Reform Party of NEW YORK
Parties that previously had ballot access -- the Liberals, Greens and Right to Lifers -- are now too weak to overcome the state's arcane ballot access laws and the major-party lawyers to even get a whiff of being on the ballot here in Suffolk.
My announcement is this: A new state party is forming affiliated with the national American Reform Party, and it will run independent and reform-minded candidates in Suffolk County (and hopefully elsewhere) in 2005 and statewide candidates in 2006, hoping to get the minimum number of votes needed to attain official ballot status.
New York State is one of the worst in the country in this regard.

William F. Buckley Jr. on George Pataki & New York Conservative Party on National Review Online
The underlying question at the party was whether the leadership, under the amiable dirigiste hand of Michael Long, its chairman, had taken too many ideological shortcuts in agreeing to nominate Pataki for a third term notwithstanding Pataki's courtship of liberal support.
Conservative dissenters from Pataki would need to write in G-o-l-i-s-a-n-o (this is chad-time again — no spelling errors permitted) and get X thousand subscribers in order to force a primary.
The conversational undertow at the big party was to the effect that if the first speaker of the evening calls it quits in 2004 after four years, then at the next Conservative Party banquet, the third speaker would take his place, and we would all listen to Vice President George Pataki.

Even when the parties are founded with some grander notion, either the Republicans or the Democrats tend to be the ultimate beneficiary -- as when the Democrats sucked the juice out of the Progressive party, and the GOP allowed itself to become the vehicle of the modern conservative movement.
One of New York's two Senate seats was held by Jacob Javits, whose political views are suggested by the fact that he regularly received both the Republican and Liberal nominations.
The New York Conservative party, they correctly perceived, was a unique remedy for the unique problem presented by that state and its aggressively liberal Republican leadership, and was not to be expanded into a national party.

 SCOPE: Conservative Party Watch
The New York State Conservative Party which just last year supported antigun and pro-abortion U. Senate candidate Rick Lazio appears poised again to abandon it’s conservative principles and support Republican George Pataki for a third term as New York’s governor.
Just last year Pataki proposed and signed into law the most intrusive antigun package in New York history and was dubbed by the AP story as a "supporter of abortion rights." Both Pataki positions are contrary to the stated platform of the Conservative Party.
Apparently though, given your party’s recent support of Rick Lazio and now Governor Pataki, I assume we can expect those planks to be removed from the party platform.

The good news is that the bulk of the costs from last year's prescription drug bill will not start until 2006.
Particularly troubling for many is the fact that this bill gives incentives for private employers to drop coverage for their retirees who receive private benefits and then transfer their seniors to the government plan that costs more and provides fewer benefits.
There are also drug coverage gaps in the new drug plan and direct subsidies to employers who might even be able to pocket these new subsidies intended to maintain existing plans and still cut back on retiree benefits," concluded Devine.
