Heil Haider! The Revitalization of the Austrian Freedom Party 1986-1991Translated by WordPort from Nota Bene ver. 4 ...   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
Only its emergence as a middle-sized party of political significance is new and the fundamental reason for the breakthrough of the past five years lies not in any shift to the right in the party's ideology, nor in any radicalization of the Austrian electorate.
Indeed, when the third party movement emerged, it grew, not out of a desire to reestablish a Lager party in the classic sense, but rather as a protest against the coalition and its clumsy handling of de-Nazification from marginally incriminated, reenfranchised former Nazis, unincriminated bourgeoisie and farmers, veterans and immigrant ethnic Germans from the east.
If the elites of both coalition parties were still wary of a situation that might place the one of them in opposition and continued to rely on Lager-style electioneering to recruit the party faithful, twenty years of political stability and rising prosperity had erased the fears of the voters.

The party lacked a radical ideology, however, and this was highlighted when it lost most of its support to established conservative politicians who adopted some of the NPD's goals during the 1970's.
Consequently, after the partial reunification of Germany in 1990, the NPD was able to gain considerable strength in the eastern part of the country: the former German Democratic Republic.
Demographically speaking, the NPD is a party of grandparents and grandchildren.

British Conservative Party election manifesto, 1950
The policy of the Conservative Party, expressed in "The Right Road for Britain" is to restore to our country her economic independence and to our citizens their full personal freedom and power of initiative.
The Socialist Party has violated the tradition in that changes in the composition of the House should be made only in accordance with the report of an all-Party conference presided over by the Speaker.
The Conservative aim is not enviously to suppress success, but to release energy and enterprise: not maliciously to sow distrust, but to create unity; not to pursue a doctrinaire and ill-considered theory, but to enable the British people to lead their traditional way of life.

Together with their sister party in neighbouring Germany, the Austrian Greens are offering their services as a reliable prop for bourgeois rule.
The actions and words of party spokesman van der Bellen have revealed the extent to which the possibility of the Green Party forming part of a coalition on a national level is taken seriously.
Apparently, they are not disturbed by the fact that the conservatives have already to a large degree adopted the policies of the FP—exemplified in the new asylum law passed by parliament that severely restricts the rights of refugees.

Austria: Greens bid for coalition with conservative ÖVP
The Green Party leadership is not in the least perturbed by the fact that they would become the partner of a chancellor who played a leading role in making the radical right politically acceptable in Europe.
Van der Bellen did not mention that the party leadership had temporarily halted negotiations because it was surprised by the extent of resistance from sections of the Green Party rank and file.
The transformation of the Austrian Greens from a “left-wing” protest party into a conservative party of the establishment is hardly surprising.

Anti-European agenda of the Freedom Party provokes government crisis in Austria
Although the leaders of the Peoples Party, the Social Democrats and the Greens had officially opposed the referendum, the turnout to support the FP proposal was extraordinarily high.
Election analysts showed that, compared to national elections held in 1999, 36 percent of FP voters followed the call by their party to support the referendum, but considerable numbers of voters from other parties also followed suit: 11 percent from the conservative Peoples Party, 13 percent of social democrats, and 14 percent from the Greens.
All of the Austrian parties are seeking to profile themselves as the representatives of these layers, although it is the FP which has operated most aggressively to openly transform these concerns into racism.

The principles for which the South contended were government by the people; that is, government by the consent of the governed, government limited and local, free of consolidated power.
The doctrine is simply this: that the Union soldiers who died at Gettysburg sacrificed their lives to the cause of self-determination—that government of the people, by the people, for the people, should not perish from the earth.
But, after all, it is the leaders of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship.
