  Dave Daubenmire -- Counterfeit Salt
Trusting in their “gospel of conservativism” we have found that the magic carpet was nothing more than an old throw-rug.
These mercenaries come to the church speaking Christian-ese, and unknowingly the “evangelicals” have allowed the salt of conservativism to frame their principles.
Conservativism, as preached from the pulpits of The Three Puppeteers has become the salt of the church, and President Bush has becomes it’s pope.

The Conservative Intellectual Movement in America
Nash presents a history of the evolution of American Conservativism particularly in the latter half of the last century as disparate groups of paleo-Conservatives, Neo-Conservatives and Libertarians managed to fuse themselves into a cohesive unit capable of temporarily gaining control of all three branches of American government.
Conservativism is about the entrenchment of power and the stratification of society.
Most importantly, he highlights that a generally uncelebrated cause for both the fusion and the success of the movement is the lack of correspondence between liberal legislation and quantitative results during this period.

Joho the Blog: The Subtlety of Simple-minded Conservativism
Kevin recommends (which is, of course, not the same thing as endorsing) an interesting essay by Roger Scruton about how a smart guy thought his way into a classically conservative standpoint.
Further, the very person Scruton goes out of his way to malign rather nastily — Foucault — is in fact one our subtlest thinkers about the way prejudice (pre-judgment, not racial bias, of course) simultaneously enables judgment and undermines it.
So we shouldn't be surprised that his embrace of conservativism is in fact a rejection of nuance.

Registered: Oct 12, 2006 08:35 PM One of the main reasons I think that the Republicans are going to get their clocks cleaned this fall is that the term compassionate conservativism no longer plays.
From Rush’s attack to Michael J to the President’s response to Katrina to the response of “it sucks to be you” to our brave men and women who signed up to be week-end warriors only to facing a 4th tour of duty, the one thing that is seriously lacking is compassion.
In short, it's a double lie and, as such, is quite fitting for neo-conservatives who hold great store in lying to achieve their goals.

What's Wrong with Fundamentalism and Conservativism.
I'm sure the first thing you are concerned about is that I spell conservativism wrong.
The basic thing wrong with conservativism in all of its forms is that the underlying purpose (somewhat subconscious) is to promote elitism, bigotry, selfishness, exploitation, etc. Nothing else about it is stable.
Fundamentalists are contradicting Christ when they claim allegories have to be interpreted literally.

It comes as no surprise that, after being willing to ignore support for Giuliani’s liberal positions she is reduced to calling the other side “elites” without naming specific differences.
This is because the differences between conservativism and liberalism don’t help their cause when spelled out.

You're right in your central point about W and conservativism, or at least conservativism as most people understand it.
Although many conservatives have yet to fully grasp this fact, the GOP of George W Bush is not the party of Goldwater or Reagan anymore.
To the extent that they ever did in actuality, the Republican Party no longer stands for individual liberty, limited government, fiscal responsibility and personal responsibility, but a kind of big government conservativism where the powers of the federal government are used towards conservative ends.
