The name Conservatoire is generally used not only of the French institutions to which it properly applies, but also of the Italian Conservatorio and the German Conservatorium, and even sometimes of English schools of music.
The celebrated conservatoire of Paris owes its origin to the Ecole Royale de Chant et de Declamation, founded by Baron de Breteuil in 1784, for the purpose of training singers for the opera.
Suspended during the stormy period of the Revolution, its place was taken by the Conservatoire de Musique, established in 1795 on the basis of a school for gratuitous instruction in military music, founded by the mayor of Paris in 17 9 2.

The Conservatoire de Paris has been celebrating its 200th anniversary over the past two months with a series of concerts, exhibitions and publications, culminating Monday in a monumental Berlioz concert in the Zénith in the Parc de la Villette.
That this is a bicentenary refers to the foundation of the Conservatoire on Aug. 3, 1795, by the National Convention.
The combined orchestras of the conservatoires of Paris and Lyon were augmented by students of 31 music schools in other countries.

 The Newest Monument in Paris: A World of Music
The Cité de la Musique and its architectural and working pendant, the new Conservatoire de Paris, are part of, and stand at the entrance to, the vast Parc de la Villette, on the grounds of the former abattoir at the northeast edge of Paris.
It is the work of the architect Christian de Portzamparc, as is its pendant, the conservatory, a nonidentical twin with its arrangement of four parallel rectangular units, with three performance spaces, including a small opera theater.
At the Cité de la Musique, it was the experimental hall that was built, and a planned 2,700- seat traditional concert hall was dropped, at least for now.

Jean Martinon studied violin at the Paris Conservatory.
Martinon spent two years in a German camp, where he wrote many compositions, such as Stalag 9 (or Musique d'exil) and Absolve Domine for men's chorus and orchestra (without violins) in memory of French musicians killed in the war.
