Raising the necessary construction funds, $230,000, proved difficult for the size of the population the rail line was to serve.

Consolidated Rail Corporation - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Consolidated Rail Corporation, also known as Conrail (AAR reporting mark CR), was formed on April 1, 1976 as a federally-funded takeover of the major railroad companies in the Northeast, all of which were financially failing.
With Conrail's increasing success, two eastern rail competitors of Conrail engaged in a takeover battle to control the railroad and expand their systems.
The lines were transferred to two newly-formed limited liability companies, to be subsidiaries of Conrail but leased to CSX and NS, respectively New York Central Lines (NYC) and Pennsylvania Lines (PRR).

Under Judge John P. Fullam, the bankrupt company threatened in mid-1973 to end all operations by the end of the year if they did not receive government aid by October 1, as otherwise it would have to liquidate.

Unlike most railroad consolidations, only the designated lines were to be taken over; the others were to remain with the old companies along with non-rail related properties.

The economic depression of the early 1840s lead to the bankruptcy of the new railroad, and it was sold in 1845 to Daniel Tyler, of Norwich, Connecticut.
Tyler and his associates completed the 103-mile line between Macon and Atlanta in the summer of 1846, giving the latter city three railroads (the other two were the Western and Atlantic and the Georgia Railroad), with a fourth, the Atlanta and West Point soon to come.

Waste-By-Rail: A System That's Been Working On American Railroads
At a time when major companies are slashing payrolls and looking for a quick re-turn on investment, a waste-by-rail project would seem an unlikely candidate for corporate support.

Although Conrail is the dominant rail carrier in the Northeast, the company cannot compete with the less-than-scrupulous truckers who frequent markets in New York and other cities in the region.
