Until the establishment of the government's own gallantry awards for saving life, it was left entirely to private individuals and companies to provide their own recognition to those people who risked their own life to save other people.
The CGC is a cross (maximum width of 36 millimetres) imposed on a wreath of laurel, with the royal crown in a circular panel in the centre.
The Conspicuous Gallantry Medal for the Royal Air Force is identical to the Royal Navy CGM, except the colour of the ribbon worn with the medal.

In 1855, the Conspicuous Gallantry Medal (CGM) was introduced as the Naval equivalent to the DCM, to be awarded to the other ranks in the Royal Navy.
In 1856 the Victoria Cross (VC) was instituted for this purpose and it remains the premier award for gallantry for the UK Armed Forces.
A significant review of gallantry awards was undertaken by the Government in 1993, which resulted in an end to the two-tier system whereby one type of medal would be issued to officers and a different type to the other ranks.

A silver bar may be issued to CGC holders performing a further act of such gallantry which would have merited award of the CGC, though none have been awarded to date.
All ranks of the RN, RM, Army, and RAF in recognition of acts of conspicuous gallantry during active operations against the enemy.

As part of the decision to remove distinctions of rank in awards for bravery this decoration replaced the DSO for gallantry as well as the Conspicuous Gallantry Medal and the Distinguished Conduct Medal.
It was first awarded in 1995 to Corporal Wayne Mills of the Duke of Wellington's Regiment for Gallantry in action during service with the UN Peacekeeping Forces in Bosnia.

Description: Plain bordered pattée cross with a laurel wreath in the background appearing between the arms of the cross.
The medal is attached by a plain bordered suspender bar which in turn is attached to the cross with a small metal loop.
The first awards were made in 1995 to Corporal Wayne Mills of the Duke of Wellington's Regiment and Colour Sergeant Peter Humphreys of the Royal Welch Fusiliers who both displayed gallantry in action during UN peace keeping missions in Bosnia.
