Conspiracy (TNG episode) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
"Conspiracy" is a first season episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation, first broadcast May 9, 1988.
On stardate 41775.5, the USS Enterprise is on her way to the tropical paradise planet of Pacifica for a scientific mission and a little bit of shore leave.
In keeping with the darker tone of the episode, Remmick's on-screen death scene at the end of the episode is one of the more gruesome ones in the history of Star Trek.

In the fictional Star Trek universe, Rixx (played by Michael Berryman) was the Captain of the USS Thomas Paine.
This character's first appearance was in the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode Conspiracy.

"Conspiracy" is the twenty-fourth episode of the first season of Star Trek: The Next Generation.
While the Enterprise is en route to a planet called Pacifica, Captain Picard receives a confidential emergency call from Captain Walker Keel, who asks Picard for a secret rendezvous on an uninhabited planet.
Picard meets with Walker and two other captains, who, after confirming Picard's identity with a series of questions about his past, tell him about their suspicions of a conspiracy of some sort reaching up to the highest levels of Starfleet Command.

Star Trek fans were decidedly mixed in their reactions to this, the ninth big-screen feature in Paramount's lucrative Trek franchise, but die-hard loyalists will appreciate the way this Next Generation adventure rekindles the spirit of the original TV series while combining a tolerable dose of New-Agey philosophy with a light-hearted plot for the NextGen cast.
Star Trek: Insurrection is a movie with story, action and extra ordinary special effects (the Data's cloaked suit come to mind), but somehow the movie just doesn't seem to be as well as executed as the previous Next Generation outing, but certainly better than Generations.

The Trek Nation - The Star Trek Conspiracy
Gene was said to have been proud of Star Trek: The Next Generation, despite some of the changes that were made to the show after he handed over many of the reins to executive producer Rick Berman, the man he hand-picked to continue his legacy.
However, he knew that there was a lot of potential that could still be tapped into in Star Trek, and he knew the only way that the franchise was going to survive is if it started to distance itself more and more from the original.
Star Trek may not be the best it could be, and maybe there are a few heads that could roll here and there.

Compare Prices and Read Reviews on Star Trek: The Next Generation - Episode 25 at Epinions.com
If you go back to my review of the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode Coming of Age, you'll notice I mention that the story there about Captain Picard (Patrick Stewart) and Admiral Quinn (Ward Costello) is actually the first part of a two-parter.
What is also notable about Conspiracy is that there is a scene near the end which has been deleted from all of the broadcasts other than the first viewing.
The real problem with Conspiracy comes when you look at it from the perspective of seven complete seasons and three movies and realize they left it open to follow up on this story in the future and never did.

The Volokh Conspiracy - Interesting Star Trek Initiative (UPDATE: NEVER MIND):
Last year, Bryce [Zabel (recently the head of the Television Academy and creator/executive producer of Dark Skies)] and I sat down and, on our own, out of a sheer love of Trek as it was and should be, wrote a series bible/treatment for a return to the roots of Trek.
But when it came time to bring it to Paramount, despite my track record and Bryce's enormous and skillful record as a writer/producer, the effort stalled out because of "political considerations," which was explained to us as not wishing to offend the powers that be.
If you want to see a new Trek series that's true to Gene's original creation, helmed by myself and Bryce, with challenging stories, contemporary themes, solid extrapolation, and the infusion of some of our best and brightest SF prose writers, then you need to let the folks at Paramount know that.

If that's what the producers were implying here, the viewers would demand, at the very least, a two-hour clip episode "event" to lay the whole thing out in a way that satisfied both internal and logical consistency.

But Gene Roddenberry didn't like the idea of a conspiracy, saying that it didn't fit his image of an "enlightened" 24th century.
