Constantin Ion Parhon (October 15, 1874 - August 9, 1969) was a Romanian scientist, politician and head of state from 1947 to 1952.
Parhon became in a short time the President of the Presidium, thus exercising the most important function in the state.
Parhon was elected the same day as President of the Presidium, though the real power in the state was exercised by the Communist Party.

A neuropsychiatrist and endocrinologist, C.I. Parhon taught Neurology and Psychiatry at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Iasi (1912-1933), and, from 1933, Endocrinology at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Bucharest.
Parhon was the founder of the Romanian school of endocrinology.
Parhon published over 400 titles and was known for his encyclopaedic mind.

His contribution to the endocrinological diseases clinic also extended to the isolation and description of new syndromes: the hyperhydropexic syndrome (called Parhon's syndrome) and the nanism of hyperhypophysis.
Along with his creative activities in endocrinology, neurology and psychiatry, Parhon undertook pioneering research in gerontology, affirming that, "aging is a pathological state" which could be treated, thus prolonging life expectancy.
In 1908 Parhon published a book about the role of endocrinologic dysfunctions in neurological and psychiatric pathology.

In 1978 Ion Mihai Pacepa, a senior member of the Romanian intelligence service (Securitate), defected to the United States.
According to the official declaration made by president Ion Iliescu when Pacepa asked his properties and position back, Pacepa was "a confused man" who gathered illegal properties in Romania by using his influential position.
His treason was a powerful blow against the regime, forcing Ceauşescu to overhaul the architecture of the Securitate.

In 1940, at the beginning of World War II, Northern Bukovina and Bessarabia, Northern Transylvania, and southern Dobrudja were occupied by the Soviet Union by the Soviet Union invasion, Hungary and Bulgaria respectively, Romania being under the dictatorship of Carol II.
In 1940 Carol II abdicated and Romania entered the war joining Germany, Hungary and Bulgaria, thus recovering Bessarabia and northern Bukovina from the Soviet Union and taking part in the ensuing invasion, under the lead of general Ion Antonescu.
In August 1944 the Antonescu regime was toppled, Romania joined the Red Army against Nazi Germany, but its role in the defeat of Germany was not recognised by the 1946 Treaty of Paris.
