Constantin von Tischendorf - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Lobegott Friedrich Constantin (von) Tischendorf (January 18, 1815 at Langenfeld, Saxony near Plauen – December 7, 1874 in Leipzig) was a noted German Biblical scholar, the son of a physician.
Beginning in 1834, Von Tischendorf spent his scholarly career at the University of Leipzig where he was mainly influenced by JGB Winer, and he began to take special interest in New Testament criticism.
On the last of these, with the active aid of the Russian government, he at length got access to the remainder of the precious Sinaitic codex, and persuaded the monks to present it to the tsar, at whose cost it was published in 1862 (in four folio volumes).

Codex Sinaiticus - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Codex Sinaiticus was found by Constantin von Tischendorf on his third visit to the Monastery of Saint Catherine, on Mount Sinai in Egypt, in 1859.
Von Tischendorf reached the monastery on January 31; but his inquiries appeared to be fruitless.
Returning from their promenade, Tischendorf accompanied the monk to his room, and there had displayed to him what his companion called a copy of the Septuagint, which he, the ghostly brother, owned.

The great edition, of which the text and apparatus appeared in 1869 and 1872, was called by himself ''editio viii.''; but this number is raised to twenty or twenty-one, if mere reprints from stereotype plates and the minor editions of his great critical texts are included; posthumous prints bring the total to forty-one.

Constantine Tischendorf, famous for his discovery of Codex Sinaiticus (one of the oldest, most complete Greek manuscripts in existence) and textual critic par excellence of the 19th century, published his massive 3-volume magnum opus Novum Testamentum Graece, Editio Octavo Maior from 1869-1872.
As Tischendorf was more knowledgeable of these manuscripts than most (he is responsible for the transcription and publication of many of the manuscripts he cites) he was specially able to consolidate the various textual differences with a scope unable to be matched by any other single human of his day.
Tischendorf cites all major readings of all major variants, provides the evidence of virtually all of the known uncials, many of the miniscule readings, as well as data from ancient versions and the Fathers.

Constantin Tischendorf's 19th century find of the Codex Sinaiticus at St. Catherine's Monastery in Sinai was an absolute milestone in the study of Textual Transmission - the history of the Bible's text.
And history has shown the Codex's importance to the study of the Bible text, for which Tischendorf is responsible, as the monks of St. Catherine had made no such effort to share their treasure with the scholarly world, if indeed they did have any indication of it's value.
Tischendorf's disparaging comments about the monastic life which he found devoid of scholarship should be viewed in the context of his genius and passion for scholarship - much like Mozart might likely have disparaged the musical tastes of a contemporary musician like Antonio Salieri.
