In the period from the fifth and sixth centuries onwards, Scotland was divided into four kingdoms: Dalriada, Pictavia, Gododdin (Lothian), and Strathclyde.
Dalriada was ruled by Scots, at that time immigrants from Ireland.
This marked the merging of the kingships of the Scots from Dalriada and the Britons of Strathclyde.

He is thought to be the king commemorated on Dupplin Cross, and is a forbearer of Macbeth, the famous Scottish king.
He was also a brother of Óengus II, who ruled the Picts as well as Dalriada from 820 to 834, and of Uen, who ruled in 837.
