In the fictional Star Trek universe, the Constitution class is a series of Starfleet vessels first put into service in the mid-23rd century.
The Constitution class label does not appear in The Original Series; the Enterprise's dedication plaque indicates it is a "Starship Class" vessel.
While convention suggests that the lowest registry number belongs to the ship the class is named for, the actual reasons for the 1017 registry number is because in the TV series, the model used for Constellation was constructed from the AMT model kit of the Enterprise.

However due to problems with the Transwarp Drive on the Excelsior Class and the four warp nacelle configuration on the Constellation Class the gradual decommissioning of the Constitution Class Refit was halted.
The first Constitution Class Refit ship to receive this refit was the U.S.S. Enterprise, registry NCC-1701-A. Launched in 2286, command of the U.S.S. Enterprise was given to Captain James T Kirk by the Federation Council and Starfleet Command in appreciation of his role in saving the planet Earth from the affects of the alien probe.
However, these refits were only able to extend the life of the Constitution Class for another twenty years and was eventually replaced by the Excelsior Class Starships and the Constellation Class ships in the late 23rd century.

One more class that should be included into these considerations is the Constellation, since the saucer top and bottom and the nacelles are very similar.
Considering that the Galaxy class is supposed to last 100 years (TNG Technical Manual), an overall lifetime of 50 years for all ships of the Constitution class doesn't seem to be very long, especially since we can assume that many ships have undergone a complete refit like the Enterprise.
Unless we invent a new class which has the same old secondary hull but is for some reason still in service, there must have been at least one Constitution-class ship at Wolf 359, and obviously this can't have been the museum ship mentioned in "Relics", two years later.

It was my understanding that NCC-1701 USS Enterprise, a Constitution class Starship,was the only one of the original class of twelve to complete its five year mission.
It might also be possible that for each constitution refit a number was added by that i mean, the first constitution class is just that, the first refit for constitution class vessels just being called constitution class refit, The third being called constitution class refit mark 2, and so on.
