The Bill of Rights, along with several other Constitutional amendments, were read and discussed Sept. 15 on the steps in front of the Student Union Building in honor of the inaugural Constitution Day, which was actually Sept.17.
The event was brought about because of a December 2004 amendment proposed by Sen. Robert Byrd (D-W.Va.) and passed by Congress to establish Constitution Day, according to Holly Monsos, interim chairwoman of the theatre and film department and event steering committee chairwoman.
Essentially, the event is in place to demonstrate that the Constitution is a fundamental document of our democracy, yet many citizens are unfamiliar with it, Monsos said.
