 Presidential Medal of Freedom Recipient Admiral Elmo Russell Zumwalt Jr.
Upon being relieved as Commander Naval Forces, Vietnam, on 15 May 1970, he was awarded a Gold Star in lieu of a second Distinguished Service Medal for exceptionally meritorious service.
Zumwalt, 79, commanded U.S. naval forces in Vietnam from 1968 to 1970 and was chief of naval operations from 1970 to 1974.
Zumwalt's eldest son fought under his father's command in Vietnam and died of cancer in 1988 at the age of 42.
