Counties reap benefits of reclaimed glass in aggregate base - Summer 2002 - Technology Exchange - Minnesota LTAP
Mn/DOT's 1999 Aggregate Specification 3138 allows up to 10 percent (by weight) reclaimed glass to be combined with traditional aggregate material and used as base in roadway construction projects.
Over the past decade, the use of reclaimed glass in aggregate base has matured into an economical and environmentally friendly solution to the dual problems of rising landfill costs and increasing aggregate demands for roadway construction.
Minnesota's use of reclaimed glass in aggregate pavement began in 1991 when Mn/DOT, in cooperation with Sibley County, began a research effort to study the use of recycled glass in combination with virgin aggregate material to be used as a road base.

 Aggregate demand will remain strong
Demand for construction aggregates used in the production of asphaltic concrete will rise faster than any other major application category, benefiting from continued growth in road building and maintenance spending.
Worldwide demand for construction aggregates is projected to rise 4.7% annually through 2007 to 21.7 billion metric tons, valued at $128 billion.
Demand for recycled aggregate products like crushed concrete and glass, secondary aggregates such as fly ash and slag, and mined materials like clay and shale will record the strongest gains through 2007.

 Forecasting EMU macroeconomic variables
But the method of construction of the aggregate series, which often involves time-varying weights, and the presence of common shocks across the countries, such as the deflation in the early 1980s and the convergence process in the early 1990s, can introduce substantial non-linearity into the generating process of the aggregate series.
A similar approach will be likely followed in empirical analyses on, e.g., the existence of an aggregate Taylor rule or the evaluation of the aggregate impact of monetary policy shocks, where linear specifications are usually adopted.
Hence, both the fiscal and the monetary authorities have developed aggregate forecasting models, along the lines previously adopted for the analysis of single countries.

 Aggregate - Enpsychlopedia
in construction, an aggregate (composite), the component of a composite material used to resist compressive stress.
For example, aggregate (most commonly stone of sand - and gravel -sized particles) is added to cement to make concrete, and is added to asphalt to make asphalt concrete.
For efficient filling, aggregate should be much smaller than the finished item, but have a wide variety of sizes.

Use of Fiber-Reinforced Soil-Cement or Recycled Aggregate for Pavement Base Course
The combination of these two factors (namely, the increasing availability of reclaimable aggregates and the decreasing capacity of landfills) creates a need-driven opportunity for a greatly increased use of reclaimed aggregates in the construction and rehabilitation of pavement systems.
Since the contribution of fibers to the strength of a cement-aggregate composite is believed to depend mainly on the fiber-matrix bond strength, the contribution of fibers to such relatively low strength composite materials prepared with low water-cement contents may be substantial in certain instances.
While plain soil-cement and stabilized base courses with high quality aggregate are certainly not new, little is known about the effectiveness of lean mixes of compactable recycled aggregate and cement, including the bond that occurs between new cement and crushed Portland cement concrete or asphalt concrete.

Graniterock: Technical Note - Compaction of Subgrades and Aggregate Base Courses
Construction compaction is the process by which the weight-per-unit volume of soils and aggregates is increased by the use of applied force.
However, sheepsfoot or vibratory equipment is unsuitable for some materials, such as river run aggregates that contain smaller amounts of clays and other fines.
Wet density determination is based upon the density of the material being tested, including the weight of water in the material.
