Industrial robots used in manufacturing lines used to be the most common form of robots, but that has recently been replaced by consumer robots cleaning floors and mowing lawns.
Many consider the first robot in the modern sense to be a teleoperated boat, similar to a modern ROV, devised by Nikola Tesla and demonstrated at an 1898 exhibition in Madison Square Garden.
After the basic construction has been completed, sensors and other inputs and outputs throughout the robot are connected to a decision-making device, usually an electronic circuit consisting of a microcontroller or similar device.

Inchoatus Review - I, Robot by Isaac Asimov   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-25)
It is a loosely connected series of short stories regarding the beginning of robot construction and—in some sense—chronicling their increased sophistication.
These tales range from a touching beginning where a nanny robot befriends a small girl, to very un-enchanting stories about mining robots and engineers attempting to fathom the motivations growing out of their increasingly complex brains, to more dire examples of unintended consequences of programming in the “Robotic Laws” that could threaten people.
The first three Robotic Laws will be subsumed in larger works of greater writers in the coming years most especially as the science becomes more realistic and the political problems more pressing.
