Consumer confidence took a surprising leap in June, hitting the highest level since mid-2002 as Americans gave a more upbeat assessment of the job market and the future path of the economy, a survey said Tuesday.
The New York-based Conference Board's consumer confidence index jumped to 101.8 in June from 93.1 in May. Those saying current business conditions were good rose to 25.6% from 22.2%.
"Looking ahead, consumers expect the economy to continue to grow at a healthy clip and to continue to generate additional jobs," says Lynn Franco, director of Conference Board's Consumer Research Center.
