Early Consumers Union product research was limited because of lack of funds to buy expensive products to test, but they did research on items of everyday concern to Depression-era consumers, such as soaps and credit unions.

He is editor of a two-volume Encyclopedia of Social Theory (2005), The Handbook of Social Theory (2001; with Barry Smart), and The Blackwell Companion to Major Social Theorists (2000), and is co-founding editor (with Don Slater) of the Journal of Consumer Culture.
Two volumes of his collected works have been published: Explorations in Social Theory: From Metatheorizing to Rationalization and Explorations in the Sociology of Consumption: Fast Food Restaurants, Credit Cards and Casinos (2001).
