The guidelines for consumer protection, which were adopted by the General Assembly in its resolution 39/248 of 9 April 1985, represent an internationally accepted regulatory framework that serves as a basis for the elaboration and strengthening of national policies and legislation in the area of consumer protection.
They are intended to protect citizens as consumers through the implementation of a set of principles of fair and reasonable standards covering physical safety; the promotion and protection of consumers' economic interests; standards for the safety and quality of goods and services; distribution facilities; redress; and education and information.
But although consumers may be more aware of their greater responsibility in the relationship between environment and consumption patterns, that awareness can only be translated into action if consumers are given the necessary information to make the right choices and thus bring about environmentally sound consumption patterns and lifestyles.
