Topic: Consumers Distributing

In the News (Fri 18 Dec 09)

Lars Perner at the Marshall School of Business at USC
Consumers will often say things that may make them look good (i.e., they watch public television rather than soap operas or cook fresh meals for their families daily) even if that is not true.
In the consumption context, then, a consumer may choose to spend a great deal of money on buying and maintaining neat and professional attire, not because he or she is particularly interested in that appearance for its own sake, but rather because this will help the consumer be successful in his or her career.
Thus, a consumer may notice that all his friends are wearing a special kind of jeans and may expect to be ostrasized if he or she chooses to wear a different brand.

Consumers Distributing - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Consumer's Distributing was a catalogue store in Canada that operated from 1957 to 1996.
Consumer's Distributing aimed to reduce costs for customers by storing goods in an inexpensive warehouse, instead of displaying them in a costly showroom.
Consumers Distributing was plagued by products being frequently out of stock, and by new warehouse format stores that allowed customers to retrieve products themselves.

Representatives of the consumer groups we contacted identified two potential concerns: first, that FTC had not required CRAs to provide a Spanish version of the summary and second, that the text of the summary may be too technical or difficult for the general public to understand.
A comment letter to the FTC from nine consumer advocacy groups said that the model summary of rights should be tested for readability before it was finalized to ensure that it could be easily understood by all consumers, including those with limited education and those who did not speak English as their primary language.
Because efforts to alert consumers, business entities, and local law enforcement agencies on their rights and responsibilities under section 609(e) were in their early stages, it is also too soon to determine the extent of the awareness and use of section 609(e) by these groups.

The consumer who receives a CD-ROM containing a free browser in the mail or as a magazine insert is at least spared the time and effort it would take to obtain browsing software from a retail vendor or to download it from the Web.
But, just as the consumer who obtains a browser at retail or off the Web, the consumer who receives the software unsolicited at home must first install it on a PC system in order to use it, and merely installing a browser product takes time and can be confusing for novice users.
Corporate consumers who need the hardware support and other non-browsing features not available in earlier versions of Windows, but who do not want Web browsing at all, are further burdened in that they are denied a simple and effective means of preventing employees from attempting to browse the Web.

Consumers Distributing was plagued more by the perception of things "always being out of stock" due to the catalogue shopping nature of the store.
Consumers did not have a computerized inventory until the late 1980s, which meant that the company was not able to track what merchandise was in the stores or what merchandise was wanted by customers.
Consumers initiated several initiatives to dispel this "out of stock" perception including "super stores" that had all of the available, in-stock products on display; and free home delivery or store to store transfer for items that were not in stock.

When consumers enter the stores, they may perceive that the housing used in the pet store to display that species of animal is appropriate permanent housing for the animal.
And so the lack of legislation in these 32 states can have a dangerous effect on the animals by implication — consumers may walk away with the impression that unacceptable temporary housing is in fact an acceptable standard of care for that animal for the remainder of its life.
